I have a 1968 Crybaby that's very uncommon. I found another one on ebay a month or so back http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=172389904901&alt=web
I bought mine back in September for $75 with the intent to restore it and sell my 1975 Sepulveda Crybaby. I finally got it ready to test the other day. It doesn't create a "wah-wah" effect when you rock it back and forth, but it has a slight change in volume. It also crackles and squelches towards the toe-end, but also when it's cocked the with my foot off; especially on notes past the fifth fret on the G, B, and high E strings.
Please help if you can.

The Cry Baby will eat batteries if you leave it plugged in to your guitar or amp.
Are you running it off a battery?
Or a wall wart AC adapter?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Correct. The original wah pedals were wired so that the battery was switched on whenever a cable was plugged into the instrument jack. Try a fresh Dura-Cell or Energizer.

If using rechargeables, also try swapping back and forth between 8.4 and 9.6 V types.
I have pedals that won't work with one of the two, but works with the other.
There are no true 9V rechargeable batteries, and tolerances can go both ways.

Otherwise, the usual suggestions apply:
- Spray out the insides with compressed air. Even if it's a mostly closed system, dust gets in over the years. If it's old enough to have a rotating capacitor with lots of fins, pay extra attention to that. A speck of metal dust can cause bad popping sounds as you turn it.
- Check for visibly broken/detaching solder joints or bulging caps.
- Lightly use contact cleaner on the jack and battery contacts, making sure you don't get it where it shouldn't go. Q-tips are useful.
