Throughout the various forums one is ever aware of the constant quest for the exclusive and elusive sound characteristics of a particular artist.

I refer you to the September issue of Guitar Player magazine where, once again, we are treated to a plethora of information about how some of our heroes pursue and create the sounds which inspire not only themselves, but their audiences.

It is a tour de force of technological wizardry to say the least, achieved through endless experimentation with an arsenal of equipment and technology not even journeymen players could be expected to have at their disposal.

Frustrating as is may be, the best we can hope for is a poor imitation of the real thing, for we neither have the recipe, nor the armamentarium with which to capture it.

My enjoyment comes not with exact replication. Heck, if that was my goal, I could just throw a CD in a boom box, play air guitar, and lipsynch. I enjoy listening to live bands play others' tunes more because they lend THEIR interpretation to them.

Besides, who can afford to chase down every instrument variation or other piece of gear to match the sound of every tune we enjoy playing? Well, maybe Oprah, lol ....

Perhaps the purpose of the article is not to instruct one in the achievement of a given player's sound, but to make clear the futility of chasing same.
