Picked up what is supppsed to be an American strat. The serial number dates it to 1998. What's throwing me for a loop is the truss rod access and the fact that it is 21 frets. Everything else seems to check out. I'll take it apart once I get home, but I figured I would ask here in the mean time.

Fender uses the "two hidden pins" style of Schaller tuners.
They don't typically use the screw-lug type, particularly on MIA guitars in the last 20+ years.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Not what I wanted to hear, but what I suspected. I'll take it apart once I get home tonight.

I give you the answer; Truss nut access is wrong

I have Fender 1998 Frontline;
American Standard have 22 frets. The neck / guitar you have is not a Am St

California Strat have 21 frets neck
Standard Series have 21 frets ( MIM ? )
Deluxe series 21 frets ( MIM ?)
In 1998 Am St cost $250 more than California series

LOL. You nailed it. What I thought was an epic deal turned into an up-and-down deal. I picked up the Strat with a Peavey 5150 for $400. Seemed like a legit combo to me, seeing as the amp is serious business. Both strats I owned were vintage reissues so I didn't think much of the unfamiliar aspects of the guitar. The Fender gig bag, headstock logo, serial number, and neck plate were enough for me. I need to be more diligent in the future, but I'm glad this was only on a $200 guitar. I've set up a trade that will end up being a wash on the guitar, and the individual is aware of the fact that it is NOT a legit Fender. Lesson learned! Thanks for your feedback, everyone.
