As some of you know , I served 20 years in the Navy . I just recently decided to start using my local VA in Providence , RI as my medical provider , so I could not only save $$$$ on insurance but also due to the fact that , I deserve it . They are great and the service over there is outstanding. Anyway , I have decided to donate a few of my lower end guitars to them so that some of the veterans who are on a low income and play, can have a free guitar . If any of you out there have any gear that you no longer use, do me a favor and consider donating to your local VA as well. Not all of our veterans are made of money and I'm sure most of them would appreciate the gift of music, thanks !

That's a great contribution, jeffo46. My first guitar was from a young recruit (sailor) who left it behind for me as a base kid. I too, as some know, have a Naval background, and I know how much the Vets would appreciate such an effort. Our VA in Canada is different than the U.S.; never-the-less they do an outstanding job.

Still, a few years back, I made the decision to leave my gear to a cause. A cop in town started a music program for under privileged kids in a difficult part of the city. Rather than leaving the equipment to someone who may or may not use it for the purpose it was built, I want the enjoyment passed on where it will benefit others who will share their experience.

Two thumbs up on your thoughtful request and your post.

I spent time on American bases with off hours being entertained in some of the fleet clubs (Norfolk, Treasure Island, Whidbey). There were and are some very talented individuals amongst the troops so there is sure to be some worthy recipients. The fun factor goes without saying.

I've done it several times.
The first time was not a good experience for me.
Donated a Gibson bass guitar to a charity I felt moved to support.
Wasn't veterans but was still a worthwhile charity.
I was a little miffed at the time when I found out what they did with it.
They kept it for a month or so and sold it off at a fund-raising auction.
Had I known about it, I would likely have bought it back from them.
I found out after the fact that it went for $25.
I decided then that any future donations I made would be to people who knew what they were looking at and would appreciate the gesture.
I have since donated several good quality pieces to people I knew personally who were without the financial means to procure anything decent for themselves.
Those experiences were more satisfying to both myself and the recipients than that first experience, although I'm sure the guy who got a Gibson for 25 bucks was pleased but he was not the one I had intended to bless.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Well BMW-KTM , The VA is definitely a worthwhile cause to donate to. Whatever you give to them will go to good use . There are many of my fellow veterans who don't have much and who are treated like dirt by our government , which makes me sick to my stomach seeing what we have done for them and also considering the fact that a huge majority of today's politicians have never even served . Even if you can't donate gear , you can donate items such as clothing, health products , books, games, radios, TV's, etc., They would certainly appreciate it.

Great idea! I've donated gear to a local organization that provides lessons to low income kids. But a lot of vets here in the Los Angeles area are just as "low income." Their treatment by government and (many ... not all) employers disgusts me no end, so here's one small way to give back.
