ian sheridan: IF you had read my previous post and checked out the tunes at purevolume.com, you'd have recognized my version of Miserlou that I recorded and re-named "Mister Lou". It's #2 on the list. FYI: #3 is really the Yellow Rose of Texas I re-named "Golden Texas Flower". It's basically the same song, just my own version and arrangement. IF you (ian) or anyone else holds a candle for Miserlou ...... DO NOT listen to the Beach Boys version..... it's horrible! Sounds like the first song they tried to learn a week after starting to play guitar. I nearly barfed...... it should be voted WORSE attempt at an Instrumental of ALL-time! (Believe me, I've heard some really bad garbage in my day!) They should be ashamed that they wasted studio time, tape and vinyl. YES, both Dick Dale's AND the Astronaut's (Denver) versions are great! I only hope my version is up to par with theirs. (at purevolume.com, enter: Aaron Archelli Band in the SEARCH.)

Tiger? Are you talking to me? I don't know about you, but at 62 I am certainly one of the 'old men' on this site, hopefully not THE oldest. LOL I've been playing guitar since 1964 and was inspired to do so back in 1956 when I first heard Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser, so yes, I've been around quite a while. Spent many a year out on the road full time doin' gigs at all kinds of venues. I've heard some incredible musicians, got the honor of jammin' with a few and even setting in with some of them. Sadly, I've also been witness to my ears trying to fall off, dry up and blow away. There are people out there who 'think' they are musicians that have yet to get a clue. I just wish I hadn't been around while they were still searching the neck for the right notes. Even when they hit one, their technique is miles down the road. I have to give them credit for believing in whatever talent they possess, but it tends to have the same affect on me that dragging fingernails across a blackboard does; I cringe....

With Ian Sheridan talking about Albatross, I'm reminded of a great little instrumental Fleetwood Mac did, called Jigsaw Puzzle Blues. I think it was Danny Kirwan that actually played lead on that one.
A good one I'm listening to at this very moment is ' Seasons ' by Jeff Beck.

"Villanova Junction" from Jimi, at Woodstock holds a special place in my heart. Short number, but the power of it, was like a swan song for the 60's.

Though I really hate Joe Satriani's style of guitar playing, his guitar song Tears in the Rain is a great instrumental song and sounds nothing like his style. Not to say he isn't talented, he's just not my cup of tea.

fenderfrusciante: I can appreciate how you 'hear' things, as I tend to agree about 'style' for any musician. Naturally, I focus on guitarists, but any musical approach can either connect or pass by. As talented as say, John McLaughlin is, I find it difficult to connect with his style. His choice of tunes and general arrangements leave me fogged and numb. It's NOT that the material isn't a great performance, it's just that the experience is like an opera in a foreign language; A communication connection is missing.

I picked mostly ones that aren't done by people known for their instrumentals, though they might be known for cool riffs.

Here are my favorites (some you know, some you may not)
Black Sabbath - Rat Salad
Gary Hoey - Any Christmas song he does, and also Linus And Lucy, Low Rider, and Frankenstein.
Jimi Hendrix - Star Spangled Banner
Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover
Albert Lee - Speechless (this is a whole album of his chickin' pickin' country telecaster - I just couldn't pick one song off of it)
Coco Montoya - Cool Like Dat
Ozzy Osbourne - Dee
Rainbow - Vielleicht Das Nachste Mal
REO Speedwagon - The Unidentified Flying Tuna Trot
Triumph - Petite Etude
Van Halen - Cathedral
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Little Wing

Hocus Pocus by FOCUS! Yeah, I know therre is that goofy yodeling, but this is a real cool tune. Second is probably Clapton doing Mason Williams' "Classical Gas." and about a million other songs.
