In that case, the Layla version of Key To The Highway. I don't know what Duane played, but Clapton was playing Brownie.

For my money..... after almost 40 years  ..... no one has even approached Hendrix's " Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock for sheer guitar pyrotechnics. Equally, the little solo after " Purple Haze" is a beautiful piece of music !!! Melancholy, bluesy with a bit of Spanish flavor-
a great ending to one of rock music's greatest performances !!!! :!:

Yeow!

Oh yeah, the jazz/fusion genre is loaded with amazing instrumentals. Pat Metheny anyone?

A lot of good instrumentals have been

mind when I saw this thread was "Red River
Rock--- by Johnny And The Hurricanes...

+ 1 I know it's old and played to death...but it was new when I first heard it. I still enjoy playing it to this day.

There is an awful lot of awsome fusion and jazz out there that are too numerous to name that fall in this category too.

Lots of good ones listed here. Lots of classics.

Something newer? Okay.

Jerry McGee playing lead for The Ventures on "Quiet Village."

The solo / bridge is breathtaking, eclipsing even the tremendously fluid melody.

SRV's Little Wing, Lenny, and I hate to toot my own horn, but I wrote a pretty darn good instrumental song in DADGAD, called "40 Days and 40 Nights." :D
