It's been some time since I followed the Forums on a regular basis. Retirement brings about a whole new paradigm of living. That does not mean one forgets cordial friends. There were regular contributors to the Forums who live 'down under'. Christchurch and Wellington in particular. We were most concerned, some years back, when a serious earthquake struck there. Fortunately, our members fared well. We pray that they as well as all others are equally safe and sound this day.

Any reports of Tsunami activity, Doc?

Yah!! That was the major reporting regarding the quake when I first learned of it. East coast of South Island was alerted to get to high ground. Apparently downgraded. See:

Some years back I worked alongside the host broadcaster TVNZ with the Commonwealth Games in BC.

A great bunch who shared their brew and good times with a lot of interest in our local sailing craft.

Here's wishing everyone well. Stay safe.

We're all good in Auckland but from Wellington south has been hit pretty bad.. There's a high rise in the CBD that is in danger of toppling over. Lots of people cut off in Kaikoura as our main highway seems to be severely damaged either side of the town.. Other than that- the people in Christchurch know what it's all like but that place has been shaken up again and a house taken off the foundation from the tsunami.

3 major quakes in 6 years in the same region.. If it were me I'd be leaving, no questions asked. Still, I respect & admire their resolve. They are a hardened bunch of people.

Take care, Blertles. As someone who experienced minor and major quakes when I lived on the Pacific Rim, I appreciate your update as I know others here have. Thanks.

Thanks for touching base with us. Good to know you are well. It was you I had in mind when I wrote the piece. There is another member in Christchurch, if memory serves, but it is not serving well these days. Perhaps you can bring me up to speed on that one. An 'R' comes to mind. What piques my curiosity is the severity of this event combined with the fact that I have not seen any coverage of it on the major cable channels I watch, nor have I seen it covered on The Weather Channel which usually deals with matters of earth science beyond meteorology when indicated.

That would be user Raytard i think, he lives in the Christchurch area. They just had another quake measured about 5.5 just north of there..

yeah it is interesting. not that we expect much coverage overseas but the quake has lifted the seabed about 2m and created walls where the fault is as high as 20m. that should be enough to get the enthusiasts & scientists attention

That's quite a displacement. Any tsunami alerts?

Knowing that NZ has quite a seafaring community, I wonder if the marinas or boaters have been affected by the quakes.
