Do any of you folks play surf music (not surfing songs with v*c*ls)?

It's been a fave for decades, and 'oft drift off into the land of the key of G and open Em chords and reverb and flatwound 11s to find ecstacy in music.

A tremendous musical experience; a Mosrite or Jazzmaster through a '65 Reissue Twin Reverb...

...and surf music continues to flourish, even for those of us marooned deep in the mainland of metro Chicago. Eternal thanks to the pioneers for bringing this lovely form of music to us, and the modern bands for continuing.

After all, what other sport has hundreds and hundreds of bands and thousands of songs? Over the space of 50 years?

Tennis? Hockey? Lacrosse? Shuffleboard? Ice skating? Not even the big money sports.....

Surf is the reason I am learning to play.

It is my goal and dream to ride the surf wave to happiness 8)

Yes.........I do surfer music. I jam with different people.........but we do play things like "Sleepwalk", Secret Agent Man, Pipeline.....and lots of others. Makes me turn on my bridge pickup, reverb, and tremolo pedal. We have fun with all those songs. So much so.......that the person I play with most, heard a band playing at a party, "Secret Agent Man" about a half block from us. He went over and told them "we" play it better (he is a friend of that bass player), which I got a kick out of. Anyway......everybody in the block agreed with him, saying we DID play it better. Yes.......surfer music is fun....but we mostly play blues and rock.

I'll play a little surf now and then, I really like to add a litlle surf flair to reggae/ska/punk.

Stuff like Dick Dale (obviously), Ventures, Agent Orange, etc

I just started to learn the Ventures Walk Don't Run. I am still feeling my way around the Blues Jr. and was messing with the reverb and kinda stumbled on to it, so I down loaded a tab and have been working on it for a couple of weeks now. My wife order a Ventures greatest hits CD that I haven't received yet. Have not listen to this stuff since I was a kid. It's just amazing when you recreate the sound yourself. I'm a beginner and still kind of in awe of the whole playing process.

Surf music is directly responsible for my decision to learn the guitar in the first place! Last fall, I picked up a compilation disc at Starbucks called "Big Waves - Five Decades of Surf Rock." Around the same time, I picked up a used copy of "Savage Night" by The Blue Hawaiians. One day my wife and I were driving along, listening to the compilation CD. I made up my mind in the middle of "Walk Don't Run" by The Ventures. I told my wife, "That's it, dammit, I'm gonna buy a guitar!"

Fast forward to the present day: I've got "Walk Don't Run" and The Blue Hawaiians' "Martini Five-O" more or less under my belt. I'm no Dick Dale, but it's a start and I'm having a blast!

Other surf bands I really like:
Red Elvises
Pollo Del Mar
Laika And The Cosmonauts

Oh, and check out some of the funky retro guitars that Eastwood Guitars makes!

Thanks, Folks; surprising variety of responses.

Couple of thoughts to responses and F.Y.I.

There is a 4-CD thing called "The Surf Box" which is a 'history' of surf music and a few surfing songs. In this opinion, just flipping totally outstanding.

Some 60s surf bands worth listening to:

The Ventures (and not only for surf, guitar instrumentals, period)
Bel-Airs
Dick Dale and The Del Tones
Challengers
Astronauts
Chantays
Sandals
Original Surfaris

Some modern-ish ones of note:

Aqua Velvets
Malibooz
Slacktone
Laika and the Cosmonauts
Torquays
(Collection) Surf Monsters and Legends
Gary Hoey (too reliant on tedious distortion for this taste but some people like him)

Yes, I play surf, too!! I don't usually use whammy bars so I don't have them installed on any of my guitars except the one reserved for surf.

You may want to check out "Devlar Surf Sessions" on Live365 internet radio. You can hear current surf bands like the Reverburritos and the Atomic Mosquitos.

Cool !!! Kind of has that "spy music" feel to it in the first 1:20 or so.
