How about those guys in the other thread, who bought the farm before switching back? They'll never get their hour back, you insensitive clod!

I wish they'd just do away with that. It's a pain in the arse and it's not 1895 anymore. Farmers these days have electricity, you know. :P

I remember the time shift being a PITA when I worked 24/7 on call. This was especially true when tackling the Winter months.

Now that I am retired, Daylight Savings won't shake me out of the sack if I decided to pull the covers over my head.

I do sympathize with those who are affected though.

I totally agree, it has out lived it's usefulness.

There's no daylight savings time change here in Zonieland. We're Mountain Standard year 'round and we like it! :D

I live in Turkey now and this time the clocks change wasn't implemented . We stayed on the "summertime" time zone and to be honest , apart from the nights getting darker quicker and having to reset my laptops , there seems to be no change..the end of the world hasn't happened !

For average Joe, there's little impact of DST. But the reason why there's little impact is that engineers work their arses off to make sure there isn't.

The witching hours have to be taken into account and special handling implemented in far more places than you think. Especially in computers and automation, you have to make sure that jobs don't run twice once a year, and not at all another. Unless that's what you intended. And data that's collected that has timestamps better not have the timestamps in a local time that uses DST, or all sorts of bad things can happen when processed automatically.
The systems can be made resilient, by measures like using UTC and converting the displayed time, but that absolutely requires that the operators understands this, and don't expect magic. And that's the weak point.

Hospital monitoring and medication equipment, banking reconciliation, PC backup programs, the estimated arrival time on your GPS, automated parking ticket systems, hourly billing - there's so many places where things can go wrong, and sometimes do.

Yes, it should be abolished, because it costs us billions of dollars in needless design changes, complexity and clean-up when something goes wrong.
