A couple of months ago, I picked up a U.S.A., 1995 (N5 serial #) American Standard Stratocaster on eBay. The seller was a music store that I figure took it in on trade and was just trying to move it out again. When I took delivery, it was sorely in need of a cleaning, polish and conditioning job, new strings, and a factory-standard set up. I did that, and everything turned out just fine.

Then a couple of weeks ago, I decided to e-mail the Fender Customer Support crew and ask them to send me the build records they have on the guitar, w.r.t. the factory features included for that serial number. In a few days I got a reply .... and now I am a bit confused.

The 1995 strat is my first Fender. It has the typical strat volume knob; it has two tone knobs. Everything seems to work just fine. The bottom tone control has a "click" hesitation at position #5 (detent) on it's 0-10 numbering scale. From my reading, and listening to how the tone changes when I spin that bottom knob, I had previously concluded I was using a TBX tone control.

But when I got back the report from Fender for that serial number, it said the guitar came with a Delta-Tone feature. (I really don't feel like taking the faceplate off just to check for pot numbers.) So, my question is: What do I have? TBX or Delta-Tone?

I suppose the recently unearthed Fender report could be in error, since both tone control types were being Factory installed about that time. I suppose a previous owner could have swapped-out the factory installed tone control for another. Does a Delta-Tone tone-control even have a hesitation/click as you rotate it?

hi you most likely have a treble cut which 5 sounds like a normal strat.anything up to ten your adding highs.basicly it is a tone filter.FENDER also used a bass cut somtimes you could have a midrange boost as well.the delta tone on the otherhand has a detent at 10 which takes the tone cappacitor right out of the picture for mass vintage treble.its like the early broadcaster (oops) NOCASTER where as you have a direct circuit with no cappacitor for bridge pickup.I hope that was enlightning cause i was starting to feel a little like MR.SPOCK!!!!!!!!  :D

Yeppers ..... That's the manual I was going by and that was my studied conclusion. Thanks for both confirmations.

Some day when I'm REALLY bored I may take it all apart and photograph the numbers on the neck, body, and electronics. I don't want to do it now because it's playing so nice and is looking pretty good for an older instrument.
