I need a good amp for under $400 tube or solid state. Anything, stack, half stack, combo just no acoustic amps.
Thanks Daniel

It's excruciatingly difficult to say. It really depends on what you want to do. For me, since I play at home, I like the G-DEC and Spider Jam "entertainment center" amps. If I were playing gigs, the choice would be completely different.

There's always the Marshall MG50DFX. Its a solid-state 50W amp. The MG250DFX is a 100W amp for $500, so how much more can the MG50 be, right?

Most online sites like Guitar Center, or Musician's friend have it set up, so that you can put an item ("guitar amplifiers"), then your price range. That will immediately list all the amps in your price range, and you can start your looking from there. Once you narrow it down, then you can go to a music store to look at your choices in person, to see what you like best.

Please don't get an MG. My buddy has the 212 50 watt one (I think) and I can't stand it. They're shoddy and sound crap, IMO (and also the opinion of many others)

Also, unless you need it I'd stay clear of stacks. A 112 or a 212 cab maybe but a half or full stack is usually very unnecessary.

I'd say go for a small, 5 to 15 watt, tube amp. Obviously fender is a good choice, also check out blackheart, peavey, laney, and epiphone.

Roland Micro Cube is great for the money but I would love to get a Fender SCXD.
Just can not find one on a floor to test drive. They go that fast.

So many choices.

I have a Line 6 / Spider 3 / 75 Watt, and I have been very happy with the sounds I get from my Strats with this amp, even with the more basic $100 footpedal it has done what I needed it too.

And even better, I bought it used from a friend so I know it's history and it's been very reliable.
