New to electric guitars. Have a gig bag for my stratocaster (no, not playing any gigs), if I take the guitar to my brother's place to practice, should I remove the arm? Seems like a good idea.

Then, I guess I'll need to tape the hole to keep the spring from falling out?

Cheers

It should be fine to remove it. I'm not some Strat expert at all, but from whatever experience I've had, I never heard or seen any issue with that.

I've never heard of a spring falling out of the hole when the tremolo arm is removed. I only attach the tremolo arm when I plan on using it (not very often). Otherwise it stays in the case.

Thanks for the replies. On American Strats, there's a short black tension spring that will fall out of the tremolo arm hole if the guitar is tilted. Do you guys remove the arm (those that keep the arm installed) when you travel with a soft case?

It's not an automatic thing that the spring falls out.
It's actually not even all that common.
It does happen sometimes (apparently, according to guitar forums) but it's never happened to me in 40+ years nor to anyone I know personally.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think the worst thing that happens is that you lose the whammy bar... but I just got my son a replacement off ebay from China and I think it was $2.75 shipped!

:)

I see no reason to remove the trem arm, yeah a hard case is always better, a good padded gig bag should be fine for a non gigging use...unless your dribbling the damn thing over to your brothers.

OK. This I can answer. Leave it in. That way you don't have the hassle of losing things nor the aggravation of taking things out and putting them back in. My hard case allows me to swing the bar to the back so as to not squish it when latching. Gig bag makes it that much better.

Ditto - and yes, take it out.

21K posts??!! Whoa. Ok, but I do use the trem arm on occasion. I'm going to remove it if I travel with the guitar and not worry about the spring. Thanks again.
