Anyone had or know of anyone who's had this and found a cure, any advise on steroid injections, surgery or remedies anyone know's that have worked. Guitar playing is severely limited at the moment, my fretting hand ring finger just locks up at times, some chords are just impossible to play anymore .

All I know about is pretty much from a physio-therapy point of view.
Taking Advil for the inflammation and then working through the pain.
Continuously and relentlessly stretching it out passively despite the pain, alternating with periods of rest and the tried and true hot/cold change-up.

I'm not in your situation but if I were, I don't know if I could go through with an invasive procedure without any hope of removing the problem. I think if I were considering invasive treatments I would opt for a surgical procedure that removes the problem before poking myself with needles for nothing more than temporary relief.

That's me and my 2 cents.
Everybody has their own ideas.

I've had trigger finger for a few years now. I get cortisone injections mixed with freezing. The relief is immediate and I can go for up to five months before I get another injection. The injections work really well for me and I have no pain or locking for several months after injections.

There are finger splints that may work:

If you use a pick, you may also consider a leather sleeve that braces two fingers together. Likely far more comfortable than a splint.

In my case, both thumbs, one cortisone injection in each thumb has done the trick (very painful during injection). This was well over three years ago, and although i can still feel the knot in my left thumb tendon, i haven't had the need for any further treatment.

Shimmilou / geewag did you fellows go straight to the injection route through your respective Doc's or eventually, having tried other routes for a remedy, reading online some people swearing by Bromelain for releif combined with tumeric.

Cheers FSB, I knew I'd seen some threads concerning trigger finger but couldn't find it.

Hi Arth, those splits could work i think, if it wasn't my fretting hand, thanks for the suggestion though, could be a nightime thing I suppose, woke up a couple of times with my finger locked, I've read some people put splits on while they sleep to prevent locking up.

BMW-KTM, I'm a bit like you I'd rather work through it or have the op and be done with it than have injections, getting to that stage though, been to the doc and had the hand xray'd, he seems to think injections are the way forward. All I know, is that it's a right PIA at the moment, stick shift geerbox, heavy duty lifting / handling at work not helping either, probably the cause of it to begin with.

At first, when my thumbs started locking up, I tolerated it until it got so bad that I had to go to the doctor because I could not function. The doc explained how the trigger finger is not uncommon in people that work with their hands, and he gave me options. Since I am not a fan of surgery (debilitating, longer downtime), I opted for the injections, knowing the possibility that it could be a one time injection, or I might have to get more injections. So far, so good.

I get locked thumb sometimes. Last week after playing for a few hours it
was fine, but when driving home my left thumb locked gripping the steering wheel.

Maybe time for a capo and more cowboy chords!

Or a thicker steering wheel with thumb rests, which helps keep the thumbs straight instead of gripping. If your thumb is tired from playing, I can see that putting it over the edge.

As we speak I'm preparing for surgery. In the past two(2) years I've had four(4) injections and like you say they help for 4-6 months. But this time the pain is excruciating and I'm just tired hopefully this will solve the problem...
