Ok nikininja, I guess it's just "refinements" and ok... sort of... as long as it doesn't get in the way playing guitar or makes me lose sleep or becomes more important than sex! :)

Exactly the reason I don't use effects at home. I end up spending more time turning dials and pressing buttons than I do hitting notes.
Nothing wrong with refinement though. Just be mentally prepared to stop yourself going too far. There's absolutely nothing at all wrong with getting to grips with all aspects of your instrument. I personally think understanding every aspect of it makes you a better player. As does increased comfort. We play comfortable guitars more than we do uncomfortable ones.
Just get ready to say enough is enough.

I have 6 electric guitars, semi-hollow and solid bodies. I almost never even check 5 of them because they always feel good. One however, a squier tele classic 50, changes frequently...I can immediately tell by the tune and feel, so it gets checked and changed frequently. It is temperamental as can be, and for some reason I cannot play it very well (which I blame on the scale).

So, I'd say it depends on the guitar.

I do use a drive pedal most of the time. I feel I can't get "my tone" without one, without cranking the amp up so high that the tea cup starts walking on the table.

And, after writing the first outline of a song, I usually try it out with different effects, to see where I go from there.

Yeah but I'm lazy and leave the songwriting to the rest of the band.
Stuff for solos, I'll experiment with sounds and record on my handheld. Just so I can listen back accurately to what works.
Funny ain't it. My amps deliver a metric tonne of gain and all I ever play at home for fun, is clean sounds.

as others have mentioned, I feel it right away when somethings a little off.

I live in New England, the climate changing from one season to another does tend make for some necessary minor truss rod tweaks. Acoustics need a little more checking as you want to make sure the top isn't sagging or swelling but again, playing em tells you right away if something feels off. Then again, my guitars are cased when not being played, so this tends to reduce the side effects of climate changes.

Ditto
