Arnold Palmer passed away earlier this Sunday. He was 87 years old. Complications from a heart problem, I believe they said. One of the finest gents of our time. RIP Mr. Palmer.

I'm sorry to hear this news. RIP Arnie!
He was so sick at this years' Masters that he didn't hit a ceremonial opening drive.
I got to see him and several others in a Senior Tour event near St Louis, Mo many years ago. He gave a lot of his time to his fans that day. He was a class act.

A timeless iconoclast!

I got to see him play at the Masters in '77.

RIP Arnie.

Definitely in my top 10 favorite guitar players of all time. He could do it all, legato phrasing, finger tapping, advanced right-hand techniques. Man, what a shame to lose such a great musician.

If he had been an athlete, I'm sure that would have been something to behold too, but alas as far as I know, he only played golf, no real sports.

This hits home deeper than the passing of some extended family members.

Mrs. LMN has known Arnie ne. Mr. Palmer for more than 20 yrs. Me... about 7.

In the 250+ FedEx, PGA, LPGA, Senior Tour and other tournaments that Mrs. LMN has run, I've only attended 3, the Presidents Cup in 2009 (San Francisco) and the P Cup in Melbourne AUS in 2011 and the 2013 P Cup in Columbus, OH. It was at the Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco for the '09 P Cup that I first met Mr. Palmer through Mrs. LMN. We especially got on with our mutual flying experiences. Turned out we both had plenty of seat time, and fond memories, in 152's, 172's, and J3s.

In 2011. the Bob Hope Classic was threatened with closing due to a lack of sponsorship. In 2010, Mrs. LMN was asked to assist. They were able to get Humana Health Care and the Clinton Foundation (who knew Mrs. LMN well) to rescue the tournament as the Humana Challenge.

The PGA asked Mr. Palmer to attend the meetings as their spokesperson, which he did on the first day. The meetings took several days and since it was January in Minnesota, I had tagged along for a few days out of the snowbelt.

The 2nd morning, Mrs LMN had gone to the CC for more meetings and I went down to the Coffeeshop for Breakfast. Mr. Palmer was there, and recognizong me, waved me to his table. While I did play golf for many years, our common ground was flying and the conversation quickly turned to the Citation X he was currently flying (a very hot Corp. jet), Mr. Palmer owned Serial # 0001 - the very 1st of the series,

Mr. Palmer, then 82, said he and Kit flew from their home in Orlando to La Jolla in the X and then took a chopper up to Palm Springs as the Cessna Service Center in La Jolla was going to perform a NAV upgrade on the X while he was gone. He said that he'd been flying with a 'Safety Pilot' since 2006 and sent the guy back to FL and would bring him back for the return trip as it was cheaper than a hotel room and per diem for the week.

Many people don't realize that Mr. Palmer's first love was not Golf, but flying. As a kid, he would hang out at LaTrobe airport (now Arnold Palmer Airport) and offer to wash planes for a ride. In fact, in 1976, he set a round-the-world speed record that still stands - Taking off from Denver in a Lear 36, heading east, Palmer circumnavigated the globe in 57 hours, 25 minutes and 42 seconds, stopping in Boston, Paris, Tehran, Sri Lanka, Jakarta, Manila, Wake Island and Honolulu.

Anyway, he invited Mrs. LMN and I to join he and Kit for dinner that nite at Wally's Desert Turtle, a well known PS hotspot. We had a wonderful time, the Food, the Wine and the Company was fantastic!

He already knew my aviation background from our 1st meeting and as we were leaving asked if I'd like to ride the right seat of his Citation as 'Safety Pilot' back to FL, along w/ Mrs. LMN and Kit, that he'd then book us a flight from MCO back to MSP.

Would I... ?? Really7 Let's see, share a 4.5 hr. flight w/ Arnold Palmer in the cockpit of a Citation X (only my 2nd Glass Cockpit ride)... Duh... H*LL Yea... !!!

We went down to LJ early to be briefed on the new NAV gear, filed our flightplan, did our pre-flight, got the Ladies on board and were off. We were on autopilot for more than 3 hrs., but I did get us clearance to decend below 500' over China Lake (Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake ) or R-2508 Special Use Airspace Complex. This is an area larger than Rhode Island w/ 2 gunnery ranges and lots of fun topographical features.

Coming in 'On the Deck' at .81 Mach, while we weren't exactly 'Fryin Chickens in the Barnyard', the Scorpians, Rattlers and Gila Monsters certainly knew we were there. Having never done any aerobatic flying in his 19,000+ flight hours, Arnie was literally grinning ear-to-ear. Said it was one of the two best flights he'd ever made. Presumably the other was his record-setting Global flight.

Imagine my shock when I read an interview he'd given later that same week to Flying Magazine stating that he was no longer going to fly in the left seat as 'pilot in command', that at 82, any further flights would be made as the co-pilot from the right seat. That meant that I shared the cockpit with Arnold Palmer on his last flight as a Pilot !!

That's the last time I saw Arnold or Kit, though we have emailed aviation stuff back and forth occaisionally.

Mrs. LMN was at the Tour Championship last week in Atlanta, came home Sunday nite, we had dinner, she did 2 loads of wash and left Monday morning for Hazeltine and the Ryder Cup. Though it's just 35 min. from here, she's staying in a hotel near the course and won't return 'til next Monday.

I was out doing errands today and when I returned, there was a call on the machine for Mrs. LMN from Amy Saunders (Arnold's daughter). I forwarded the msg. and Mrs. LMN said we're going to go to the services and internment. Whether it'll be in PA or FL isn't yet clear, but it is truly a sad passing of a wonderful Man.

Few are so fortunate as to impact so many lives as Mr. Palmer. Though our contact was brief, I feel as though I've lost a brother.

cheers!

Great story and great memories for a great man, Lightnin'. Thanks, for sharing.

You were a great golfer, Mr. Palmer; but, most of all a great role model that all too often is missing today.

Condolences to family and friends. RIP AP.
