+1000

And as the forum's resident luddite, I regard any subsequent "improvements" to the finest electric guitar ever devised by man to be utter blasphemy.

Arjay

+1K...you are not alone! There are many luddites here and I for one am not a fan of any of the "Improvements"! Every guitar I own (except the EC Strat, which is mostly vintage spec) is of vintage spec, you just can't beat what Leo got so right straight out of the box!

Fender is just playing the marketing game here now with the American Standard.

They say it takes all kinds to make the world go round.
With the teeming masses all reaching for the old school in the world of guitars (relics and re-issues) I find I am very happy to have things like 5-way switching, flatter radius boards, bigger and harder frets, consistently tight neck pockets, consistently wound pickups, etc.

I live in the camp that believes there IS such a thing as an improvement.

That said, I do admit to leaning more to the old school when it comes to amplifiers.

I seem to be an anomaly. Most people are just fine with vintage reissue guitars and modern disposable amps. Maybe I'm an odd duck after all.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If they do, it'll just be name changes. I think they've shot emselves in the foot a bit already with pricing. The economy hasn't recovered that much.
Their cheaper American made (Highway1/Special/Whatever it's called now) is likely selling far better. And rather than drop the price on the Standard, they've decided to add some new stuff to it.

Someone said Bill Schultz named it after a visit to the men's room. The toilets at the Brea Distribution center at the time were American Standard toilets. :?:

As I posted on the Strat forum, it's true. Zzounds is discounting their American Standards by $200. That's something they never do.
Dang! Missed it by 18 months.

Price drops at Musician's Friend, too. Looks like it's across the board.

Dan Smith, the Fender visionary that brainstormed the American Standard series into reality has passed away. He also started up Fender's Custom Shop, and instituted the Artist Signature series.
Let's hope he didn't know what FMIC had done.

Not all change is bad, folks. There's a photo of a preproduction American Pro Strat that was sent to some artist floating around... it looks like an American Standard in a new color (similar to "olive" as on the new Mustangs). There may be some subtle changes to things like pickups or neck profile, but it doesn't look like they did anything weird. No truss rod wheel or digital tuners or anything like that.

That said, as a Jazzmaster fan (and owner of a '66), I await the rumored American Pro Jazzmaster and Jaguar with some trepidation....

Artists floating around are not uncommon...

Like the Deluxe and Elite? I am pretty fufilled with my 3 American Standards now so unless my house burns down
or I get robbed Im not going to feel this. Im 52 now and if I bought another it would be a Custom Shop 62 or 64 maybe even a 76.
Anyway yeah Im good so they can do what they want. If I like the updates I might buy it anyway.

Forgort my P Bass... Yep Im good! :) They can do what they want now.
