I received an email from The Stratosphere parts dealer that stated, "The Fender American Standard® series will soon be discontinued." Any more info on this? Anyone heard this in other channels? If so, I wonder what will fill the hole in the Fender line.

Here is the link to their announcement: https://goo.gl/dv8AB9

I find it most unlikely that a flagship series like American Standard is simply discontinued.

If it is true, the company will probably just rename the standard US made series and add a few slight improvements, maybe bring back the vintage 6-screw bridge with the cast saddles, but nothing too drastic.

Maybe it means that Stratosphere is discontinuing their American Standard line of parts.

Fender hasn't made any official statement about this rumour.

It's likely possible they'll add the "spoke-wheel" truss-rod from the Elites and other minor changes such as the compound radius fingerboard. Maybe a rear rout without the pickguard and a side-mounted jack.

It's happened before . . . sort of.

In 2000, Fender discontinued the American Standard line of Strats and offered a redesigned Stratocaster "with upgraded features and playability" and called it the American Series Stratocaster. I have a 2005 model in sunburst.

In 2008, the American Series Stratocaster was discontinued and Fender offered a new, redesigned Strat "with better bridges, tinted necks, 'parchment' control knobs and pickguards, and new finishes". They called it . . . >Insert drum roll and cymbal crash here< . . . the American Standard Stratocaster.

Everything old is new again.

It's expensive to have different types of non-interchangeable necks, pickguards and whatnot - you double the number of factory cells needed. So I can fully understand that they want to drop one out of two.
But if they want to transition fully over to the Elite, I think they are doomed. Too many of the buyers buy Fender because of the legacy, and want instruments from their youth.
See how Gibson had to crawl back and re-introduce the T (traditional) line. If Fender bets everything on the Elite, they'll almost certainly end up in the same situation.

And as the forum's resident luddite, I regard any subsequent "improvements" to the finest electric guitar ever devised by man to be utter blasphemy.

Exactly.

Gibson did some SERIOUS scr**ing up their standard models in 2014/2015, and retreated almost immediately.

If the typical Gibson/Fender people wanted modern guitars, they'd go Ibanez or Jackson, for Lord's sake.

I myself like the American Standard series because it is a playable instrument that still is classic enough. I wouldn't go elite or deluxe.

I'm glad I got my 2014 MIA Standard Strat. At least I got a 60th Anniversary "engraved" neck plate with it. :D

There are improvements, and then there are improvements. Some make sense, and don't change the instrument.

Being able to use thinner strings and an unwound g string because the nut is filed differently now is ok with me.
A modern string tree that doesn't snag and cut the strings or rust is also fine with me (although purists like the old crappy disk and bent iron ones).
Having a pickguard that doesn't shrink, or screws that don't rust as badly is also fine with me.
Graphite lubed machines instead of grease that solidifies is good too.
So is having an option of different neck profiles and fretboard radii. Not all hands and playing styles are the same, so that makes sense.
Not using ivory nuts, Brazilian rosewood fretboard, real tortoise shell picks and white lead paint for the base for candy apple finishes is understandable too.

But making new and incompatible necks, not so much.
