Hey Ya'll,
Before I start here, I'd like to assure all my friends out there in Fender land (or at least the folks out there who tolerate me, LOL), that I'm still alive and doing well! As most of the old timers out there know, I do tend to come and go around here anyways...aside from having a life outside of internet forums, I do get bored or frustrated with things around here from time to time. That said, in this case my family FINALLY got our move over with! It was over 3 years in the making, but after countless fights with bankers and realtors, my wife and I bought a new house in the South Akron area of Ohio (MUCH closer to where my wife works). The house itself is a fair bit smaller that our old house was, but it's on a very lovely piece of property, in a REALLY great area and while we still have quite a fair bit to do...after 3 months, we're still unpacking, still need to get the old house sold, etc...we're now doing quite well. Needless to say, this whole moving thing has kept me insanely busy lately!

So with that out of the way, I'll cut to the chase here - now that we finally have the bulk of this moving business out of the way and are getting settled in to the new house and new area, it's time for me to start shifting my attention back towards music! I've already worked with a couple of local people down here, but the short of it is that I'm putting a new band together...and I'm feeling like after 30+ years of playing, with the past 5 years or so being in variety or Southern Rock groups, it's time to get back to my roots here, so I'm in the process of putting together an upbeat blues-rock type of project. This is going to be a 4 piece group, 2 guitars, bass & drums - at least for now...I'll likely start adding some guitar synth work or bring in a keyboard player at some point as well. Pretty much aiming to keep most of the stuff pretty "stupid simple", at least to get things started and off the ground.

The tunes list I/we have already is pretty much close to enough to fill out a full night IF we stretch a few tunes (the lovely thing about blues...some of those tunes, you can just jam on forever, LOL). That said however, I really don't want to have to rely on that ALL the time...a couple of nice long jams per set is cool, but I'd like to get a bit more material on the set list. My philosophy is that I'd rather have too many tunes, than not enough. This is essentially going to be a bar/club band, so I'd like to have enough material to fill out a solid 3 sets (perhaps with some jammin' to fill out the end of the night). I'm going to include the list of what we have so far, to give everyone an idea of the type of material we're looking at...the top half is stuff that I/we have done at some point and the rest is tunes that, while I've never actually played them for the most part (or haven't played in a LONG time), I think could be pulled off pretty easily.

Oh...for those who don't know me, please be aware that this is NOT going to be a "note for note" kind of project...we're NOT doing a tribute band or anything of that nature here, so there's a lot of room for "artistic license". As with all of my music, I do very much plan to put my own stink on things as it were, LOL!

We're mainly looking for material that will go over well with the proverbial bar crowd. Again looking for mostly upbeat tunes...we already have a fair bit of slower blues tunes (although if you have something I've missed, feel free to add it), but a lot of this is looking to keep people on the dance floor. As I'm sure most of you will gather from the list (as it stands right now), I would like to keep the vast majority of tunes to stuff that's easily recognizable for most folks (at least most older folks who would go out to a bar to see a blues band)....SRV, Clapton, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, etc., with a bit of more classic blues thrown in here and there...some Buddy Guy, BB King, etc..

So with no further adieu, take a look at what I have so far and if you have some appropriate suggestions, feel free to throw them out there! I KNOW there's gotta be a lot of tunes I've missed, but I've had a brain cramp for about 3 days now over this, so I'm grateful for some ideas to get the ol' juices flowing!

Thanks!

Here's the list (in no particular order) as it stands right now...

Hi Iomitus, hope you and Mrs Iomitus have good times a plenty in your new gaff, as for the set list I'd be happy to sit and listen to what you already have, maybe a little Peter Green Fleetwood Mac stuff like Oh Well, Need Your Love so Bad could squeeze in there though

Hey Ya'll,
Thanks for the suggestions and please keep them coming! Yea, there's a couple there that I was actually considering that just haven't made it to the list yet...Hooker's "Boom Boom", for example. That said, "Flip, Flop & Fly"...totally forgot about that one (I may have to dig out my old Blues Bros vinyl, LOL). I had been thinking about Roadhouse Blues, but that tune just never sounds right to me without piano/keys regardless of who's playing it (just sounds thin in the middle without that honky-tonk piano in there)...and for now at least, we're not planning to bring in a keyboard player.

Anyways, again some great suggestions there...keep 'em coming!

A few faves of mine that are a little out of the mainstream:

Under Suspicion - Robert Palmer
Shape I'm In - Arc Angels
Can't Lose 'Em All - Devon Allman
If This Is Love - Troy Turner
Tattoos & Cigarettes - Warren Haynes

I find it's sometimes good to intersperse a few tunes the crowd isn't necessarily familiar with.

"Midnight Rider" and "Whipping Post" - Allman Bros
"Born on the Bayou", "Susie Q", and "Heard it Through the Grapevine" - CCR
"Red House" and "All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi

And this last one turns out pretty well without keys
"You May be Right" - Billy Joel

"Further on up the Road" and "Messing with the Kid" are both now on the list (totally forgot I used to play Messin' with the Kid, LOL). Also added SRV's "Cold Shot"...first time I've ever played it with a band (I've screwed around with it against mp3's), so I was rather surprised how well it came off for a first attempt.

Tryin' to avoid stuff like the CCR & Billy Joel...not really that bluesy (to me CCR works well for Southern Rock, but not really blues). I'll have to take a listen to a couple of the others.

We did audition our first drummer yesterday...the guy was decent and the bass player really liked him, but I had a couple of concerns (i.e. the guy was REALLY loud for the first half of the practice, didn't always pay attention for cues and such, etc...), so we're going to try out a couple other guys before we make a decision.

I also realized just how horribly out of practice I am! LOL! 3 months of moving into the new house and dang...guess I haven't really been picking up any of my guitars that much (other than getting them in to the new practice space). I had jammed with a different band down here a couple of times and I've had one of the acoustics out back around the fire pit once or twice, but I ended up feelin' really sloppy yesterday. Guess I need to start doin' some "wood shedding" here...

Anyways, keep those tunes coming...seems like every batch, we add a couple more to the list...I'm grateful!

Thanks!
