Here's wishing all the gang a great weekend and a super Labo(u)r Day.

Looking forward to a BBQ and football rivalry. Enjoy the time with those who surround you wherever you are.

Here where rugby was stolen from the Brits, and football, as we now know it (running with the oval ball), was invented in the 1800s (http://www.cfl.ca/2011/05/15/birth-of-n ... 137-years/)(along with basketball), being a huge CFL fan, I also enjoy American college ball, and the NFL. I have a long time affection for my neighbours, brothers and sisters, to the south. Having said that, here's some holiday humour from a Canuck country dude. This is how we roll:

All kiddin' aside, I've had and still have my share of American beer. :P Cheers!

Yeah, happy Labor Day to everyone, too. Try not to get arrested or something. :P I'm sure there will be a few around here over the weekend. It's the last blow out before the summer season officially ends and it becomes more or less a ghost town, since it's a resort area. Then again, we have that tropical storm heading our way so maybe not so much craziness like it is during Memorial Day.

How's the storm situation, Paul?

It looks like that we're not in it's direct path anymore, but we'll probably get some wind and rain from it. As long as the power stays on, I'm cool with it. I check with the National Weather Service, because the local news stations have a tendency to exaggerate things, it seems. I think they do that for ratings so you stay tuned in.

A belated, Happy Labor Day to all. We were fortunate to be able to spend it with our (only) Granddaughter.

I went camping up in the mid-north central part of the province at a lake near St. Paul.
A woman I met a couple of months ago and have been dating decided it was time for me to meet her friends so we loaded up the motorhome and attended a yearly gathering of her and her friends.
I had an eventful weekend despite some gloomy weather.

I attended a rodeo for only the 3rd time in my life. I enjoyed most of it but there were a couple of moments I thought I might hurl. Some poor bastard had a 1500 lb. bull dance on his chest. He managed to climb the fence and get out of the ring but once he was over he never got up again. Flack-jack or not, I don't think it's very likely there's much left of his rib cage. I was sick to my stomach witnessing that. Especially seeing it so closely. It happened only about 35-40 feet from me. The rider didn't move or make a sound when the paramedics hauled him out. The crowd was pretty quiet.

Another moment was when the shoe was on the other foot and the steer was the one who got it real bad. Team roping event. There was a little too much slack in the lines when the second cowboy lassoed the hind legs. When the horses tightened up the ropes that poor steer must have been thrown 8 feet in the air. The steer was pretty slow and wobbly when it got up. I don't know if I'll watch a rodeo again. I don't have the stomach for it.

I went on a couple of quad rides. I don't own a quad myself because I'm a two wheel kinda guy but I surprised those guys with my riding. I told them not to worry about me. Just ride your own pace and I will keep up. They kept quickening the pace more and more and I kept threatening to pass. I had an absolute blast. If I had known there would be riding I would have hauled the KTM up there and had a real good rip.

I played a round golf. I'm a complete duffer but I had fun anyway. I shot 111 which is much better than my typical 125. Golf is not something that comes naturally to me but I enjoy it anyway.

I deep fried a turkey for the gang. Many of them had never had it before. I cooked it to perfection and it was a huge hit.

Five couples and one single woman, so eleven people but the part that made it interesting were the 10 dogs. I actually got a sore shoulder from throwing the ball so much.

Hope everyone had a fun and safe long weekend.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

What a lot of bull.
But, seriously Matt, I sure hope that bull rider is okay. It's definitely a tragic ordeal. Thanks, for the post.

It's also great your Labour Day weekend was fun, and a welcomed success. :D
I know what you mean by being able or not able to take the sport of rodeo with all of it's handling of animals and people. Each have their merits and downsides.

Some years back a local town celebrated their 100th anniversary. They decided a rodeo with country music, dances, and related festivities was the direction to take. I and the crew were invited there to televise the whole rodeo. What a treat for us as it was a first for many.

We had cameras and microphones in key positions when a bronc rider needed to complete one more ride in order to win best all around cowboy. With an over the shoulder camera shot his chuted horse lunged forward in a tightly packed position with a back kick. This tossed the rider over and towards the metal pipe rail in front of the bronc. The cowboy struck his forehead hard, and the microphone added to our belief that he may have cracked his skull. Those around him, along with us, were concerned about his condition. They tried, unsuccessfully, to get him off the Bronc to safety. The cowboy was not going to give up his position at this late stage of the competition. The crowd could not see the commotion from their seats, and were unaware of this accident. With blood pouring down his face, he adjusted his Stetson and grip and called "Pull". The gate opened, and off he went to win the contest.

It was both one of the toughest and foolish things I have ever seen. It certainly was dangerous.

For those who think they are tough, you might want to meet a rodeo cowboy. They are a breed all of their own.

FSB
I hope all you lizards had a good holiday. I have ridden; but, this holiday I declined the broncs and bulls, and safely chose to enjoy being an armchair quarterback.

Happy Labor Day to everyone celebrating whether it’s parades, BBQs, parties and gatherings, perhaps. gigging or jamming, Tom foolery or relaxing. (Hope your day is swell too, Mud. Maybe you’ll catchup to celebrate after work?)

Labor Day is a day for traditional CFL football classic games that always occur with the same matchup of rival teams, two in the east and two in the west.

Halftime is presenty 17 EDM 10 CGY
Edmonton Eskimo’s (former QB Warren Moon)
vs Calgary Stampeders.
both Alberta teams.
(Calgary consistently wins this so an upset is the name of the game).

2 1/2 hours from now:
Toronto Argonauts
vs Hamilton Tiger Cats (Former QB Flutie)
both Ontario teams.
(Toronto and Hamilton are close to being a twin city, and that’s part of the rivalry with these football teams since the 1800s).

Yesterday rival teams Regina & Winnipeg (former coach Bud Grant) played.

If you want to see the CFL, these back to back games are sure to be entertaining. The game has evolved a lot in the past year, but still 3 downs, a longer and wider field, and 45-50 yard field goals are not uncommon.

Still, Canadian viewership of NFL games is up while American viewership is down. The opposite for both seems to be the case here. :P

Enjoy the day.

Go Cats! :D
