In 1964 the Anchorage, Alaska 9.2 magnitude earthquake traveled to Mexico along the West Coast of North America. The 4 minute long earthquake was the largest ever recorded in North America and the second largest in the world. It hit my home of Vancouver Island, BC with a bang that elsewhere did damage and caused a Tsunami. Amongst the 139 deaths between Alaska and California, none were reported on the Island, most were in Alaska, and some as far away as California. Even the Florida Everglades saw a rise in water. I simply got tossed a few feet sitting in a living room chair while my brother slept, and my parents felt nothing just blocks away. Recently, I came back from Vancouver, BC and with their waterways, poles and overhead electrics (electric buses, etc.), tunnels, bridges, and Skytrain, I can see that, if the projected big one should come, there will be a mess.

The Pacific rim of fire put a fault line directly under the home I resided in. Dormant volcanoes and Mount St. Helen look alikes are in the vicinity. That being said, with thousands of earthquakes surrounding my past from the north, south, east, west, and below, near and far, I fear tornadoes more only because a tornado is always nasty. I escaped one in North Dakota, Canada's largest F5 landed about 15 miles down the road, and I can honestly say that was more of a concern because there was no where safe to move to. Earthquakes and Tsunamis do, however, demand respect.

Looks like Oklahoma's energy practices are adding to the 50+ % increase in quakes in the past year or so. Oklahoma needs comprehensive earthquake building standards if they are not yet in place.

Stay safe, LawFlow, and stay cool. Minor earthquakes are common, and usually just that - minor (especially depending on terrain and water). YMMV.

Earthquake insurance can run about $850 a year up here north of the border. A substantial amount compared to what I paid 16 years ago prior to it being made unavailable.

The New Madrid fault is a well known and substantial seismic zone in the midwest USA! Not as well publicized as the San Andreas fault, but with significant destructive potential.

I was 12 and remember that very well. It was huge. We're numbering in the thousands of small quakes recently and the numbers continue to climb. The Madrid Fault is due for another catastrophic quake and it won't be in an uninhabited wilderness this time. It will involve the whole Midwest region. The one today was felt in Dallas, Kansas City and many other places outside of Oklahoma. The dogs were freaking out up and down our street.

You know, I don't think there's a place around that isn't prone to some sort of natural disaster or at least crappy weather.

Any reports of casualties or damage?

Yes Arjay, there was damage. Nothing like the tornadoes that continually ravage this area. Mainly fallen chimneys, cracked foundations, walls and broken stuff. People always fall down, but fortunately, most of us were in bed. This was at 7:05 AM.

You know, it's really freaky to feel like someone is picking up your bed and throwing it across the room while you're sound asleep. With tornadoes, we usually get warnings and sirens so you can somewhat prepare. I've never seen the animals in the neighborhood freak out like they did. We thought our poor dog was chasing a fox or raccoon. Oh well. Just waiting for the big one which we all feel is coming soon. Hope to sleep tonight.

Earthquakes have their own rules. I remember as a kid walking to school and the shake was so subtle that we could tell something was up from the picture windows shaking the reflections. I've also been at a stoplight with the car when it started to shake from side to side. When it started it was little and the sway made me think of a motor mount or other problem until it became obvious. Driving away from the light settled the motion somewhat.
The last earthquake I experienced was in a 100 year old home with old single pane windows in the bedroom. In the middle of the morning our bed shook, and I sat up. I could see the windows vibrate. Mrs. FSB had yet to experience a quake since she came from the prairies. There she was in slumber land unaware and that's how I left her. After she found out about the excitement the next day, I tell everyone my wife can sleep through an earthquake.
Some people have made earthquake kits similar to other disaster kits. I like to build one starting with the booze first. That helps to settle the nerves. :D

FSB
Glad to hear of no casualties, and thanks for mentioning the Madrid fault.

I think your priorities need some "re-alignment".

I've been prepping for decades and while spirits are an integral part of my kit, there are far more important commodities than potable analgesics.

That may be true, Arjay; but, alcohol makes a good antiseptic too, and it's a decent trading commodity, and don't forget your axe. :D

In case this doesn't work out, I'll refer to the survival skills I learned in the Navy, my former Wildlife membership, and the SAS survival manual in my bookcase. Failing that I'll refer to my How To Build A Log Cabin.

The first comment is my lame stab at humour. A sense of humour is a necessity for survival. IMHO.

The rest is real. I too take safety and survival with Mrs. FSB seriously, and it must be working because I'm still here.

Ah, yes......lay about in a drunken (but aseptic) stupor, waiting for the constable to ride up and save you from calamity.

Makes perfect sense.

As for your "axe", by all means bring it along.

At least you'll have something to paddle your boat with as you sail up that proverbial creek.
