I saw this great vid and intead of seeing these modes as dots on a fretboard diagram you can see how they come to life when played by a great guitarist.
When you have plenty of time, the more of this vid you see the more it starts to make sense and if you see it through to the end he plays a jam using a few modes together. Yeah, I found it very interesting, suddenly Allan Holdsworth, John McLoughlin ( I think I'm spelling these right, not sure. lol ) Even Miles Davis start to make sense.
I hope you enjoy.

Thanks, Rhumba.

Note to viewers: Skip the first 5-6 minutes, which is elevator muzak that doesn't match what he's playing. My guess (but I could be wrong) is that the music was changed due to a copyright issue.

Dorian and extended blues scale goes hand in hand, and is a combo I use often.
One thing that can block modal changes is to communicate them in a jam or improv. There should be some hand signals for those :)

Hi arth,
Yeah the vid probably is spread out more than it needed to be but I was interested in the playing aspect of it. We see so much technical theory about this kind of thing that a lot people shy away from it.
Here is a kind of hands on playing were the modes are given a good demo of styles and how these are used in various improvisational expression of blues, jazz, rock and others. Instead of the cold diagrams that we always tend to get in scale form.
I think what I'm trying to say is that he brings it to life and gives it interest, rather than just theory and technique.
I found it interesting anyway. lol
:D
