Hello,
I have been playing guitar since I was 10, but stopped when I was 13 and went through a weird rap phase; oddly enough, a rap song got me back into classic rock and guitar. I picked the guitar back up a couple months before I turned 15 and got serious about playing. Back in May, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Just recently, in late July I started experiencing some similar symptoms and just now a week or so after I turned 16, I'm beginning to experience joint pain from Lyme and it's particularly bad in my fret hand.

Does anyone know any kind of quick and easy temporary solutions to help with the joint pain in my fingers, so that I can play without as much pain. I'm not looking for any permanent fixes, but if you know of one, please tell me (lol).

If you've experienced similar problems and kept playing, please tell me about it; I'd like to know.

Congratulations on leaving rap behind you.
I wish more people would do that.

A simple NSAID should be a helpful short term solution.
I like ibuprofen but it should not be taken without also eating some food as it can be harmful to the lining of your stomach if taken alone.
You should also not get into a dependancy on it as the stomach issue can be cumulative over time and you may develop a sensitivity to it.
Remember to avoid combining NSAIDs as there can be additional issues.
The worst that I know of at the moment is the combination of acetylsalicylic acid (Asprin) and ibuprofen (Advil).
Do not take them together at the same time.

Enjoy rocking out!
Cheers!

Sorry to hear of your Lyme disease diagnosis. Hopefully, you were properly treated with one of the proper antibiotics following the diagnosis, and your condition has not progressed to advanced nor long term Lyme disease syndrome.

Before taking anything, have your parents get a recommendation from your physician. If need be get to a specialist for a second opinion on your condition.

If you have not seen this, here is a link to a current article published just this past Monday, August 22, 2016 regarding the ongoing efforts of one physician treating symptomatic patients of tick borne illnesses. Consider reaching out to her or the Clinic mentioned in the article.

There are also numerous related articles from the CDC, WebMd, and others.

As well, there is a topical cream called "Blue Emu" which may offer additional temporary relief. I use it on my knees and lower back (both afflicted with osteo-arthritis) and it helps to some degree. It might work on your hands as well.

I sympathize, good luck.

Muscles can to a good extent compensate for joints and joint capsules not working 100%.
I'm not recommending lots of exercise, but just that you remember to move your fingers around when your hands don't have much better to do. Just a little wriggling every few minutes will keep your muscles in good shape, and help protect your joints when you practice.
Also, try to warm up before playing, including light(!) finger exercises. It pays off.

Thanks for the advice, I think my grandfather used something similar to relieve some of the pain from the bone spurs in his hand and wrist from refusing to ever wear a catcher's mitt during the 20+ years he spent coaching softball teams.

Ok thanks. I had seen a video about something similar and I started stretching my fingers and doing some light exercises, but that ended with a similar fate to most new year resolutions.

Sad to hear of your Lyme disease, but, on the upside you had good medical attention to diagnose the problem that is often unknown or understood by many physicians.

With osteo in my knees I, like others, did not think Glucosimine Sulfate would work for me since I kept hearing that it didn't work for many.

I ran into a lot of pain that almost kept me from getting out of bed one morning, and that took me to a sports clinic. I was x-rayed and diagnosed with knees that were less than desirable. NSAIDs definitely work short term; but, after having some side effects, and learning that they can actually cause more joint issues, and other risky side effects, I took a closer look at Glucosimine based on discussions with doctors who said there were not a lot of choices. Mad cow disease was all the rage at that time, and, although never proven nor denied, Chondroiton was considered a possible avenue for transmitting Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) as well. So, at the time I stuck with Glucosimine by itself.

What I discovered is that there is a product (manufacturer starts with W) that makes Glucosimine Sulfate in tablet form that uses Shellfish/Crab exoskeleton as a base rather than the normal chemistry. It works! At least for me, and I don't need it continuously. This product differs from the usual offerings in it's composition and, I'm guessing, it's affect.

Several things though:

1) It may be hard to locate, but it has been available for some time (Japanese researched). It also is made by a big Canadian player in Glucosimine and household names in vitamins and more. Found at drugstores, and possibly health food outlets. Perhaps, this Canadian product is available or maybe there is another similar product.

2) Slightly more cost, but sometimes goes on sale. Well worth it in my opinion and, perhaps. that's the reason why similar products don't work as well.

3) Sometimes, it takes a few times before the Glucosimine works.

4) Not for those allergic to shellfish

5) Pretty natural with no ugly side effects.

I can't give any guarantee that it works for you or others; but, I have been lucky in discovering this, and maybe you will too.

Best of luck, Stratosaurus-rex

All of this from someone who didn't grab pain killers even for a headache unless absolutely necessary, and from preventing B12 deficient shots monthly by researching, and finding B12 under the tongue works much better than a regular oral application which often does not work at all.

+1.

Although I've never had a doctor or dentist recommend a "natural" remedy. I wonder why that is.

But anyway, if the pain is caused by inflammation, here are 2 natural remedies to try (ask your doctor first):

1. Ginger - either fill capsules or grate and eat raw

2. Turmeric - fill capsules with turmeric powder

Ok, thanks. I had read about those somewhere.

I'll throw another prescription name out there that changed my "quality of life" w/ regards to joint problems.
Celebrex...yeah it works for me, better than the multitude of other things I've tried that were recommended already here.
You're to young to not try anything and everything until you find what works for you. Hopefully you might outgrow the problem entirely, best of luck.

PS: if one doctor says no and you're still having the problems w/ what they recommend---> go to another doctor!!!
