Does anyone here practice any sport or have any particular activity, besides playing guitar?

I like karate a lot. Gives me plenty of anti-stress relaxing meditation and keeps me healthy.

I "exercise" semi-regularly but I also do an occasional marathon.

4 ½ hours on the "work-bench".
That's a lot for an old timer like me.

(FYI, my work bench is queen size and I do some of my best work there.)

(I have an inkling Rog may know what I am alluding to)

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Running, I do it a few times a week.3/3.5 miles usually. clears me head, helps me stay in reasonable good health and shape.

(I'm 59, I know a lot of guys around my age that cant' climb a flight of stairs)

and I play some Golf.. I'm not great at it, but I like it all the same. I've come to realize that Golf is God's way of reminding you that you are just going to suck at somethings..

In my youth I played a variety of sports. But, at my age today:

For anti-stress-
It's the Strat. Gotta love it.

For anger release (when I hear a drummer joke) and exercise-
It's the drums (they're retired like me). Great cardio workout.

For Sport-
Armchair quarterback, and I don't haveta guzzle Gatoraid.

Arcade games, otherwise none, whatsoever.

Give the youth a bottle of hooch before sport traps them.

In my Yout (nod to Joe Pesci), I was a D1 Hockey Goalie (actually had an AHL opportunity after school, but the USN saw it differently).

I've played on several amateur teams through the years and in a couple Senior Leagues recently.

Now, I volunteer to do a 2-hr. Clinic twice a month for Bantam/HS goaltenders from the 7 cty. area which turns out to be a fairly good workout.

Also, I have a buddy some 20 yrs. younger who is a Muay Thai fighter. I spar with him for an hr. once a week at his gym... He takes it easy, I mean REAL easy, on me but it's a workout all the same.

I also take my morning coffee daily in front of the news on my recumbent exercise bike (equivalent to about 8 mi.) and bike about 30 mi./wk. during our 6 mos. of non-arctic weather.

cheers!

For fun and fitness, I ride a front suspension hard tail mountain bike with hybrid tires. This is my main form of year round cross training. I ride 5 days a week.

To keep things varied, I'll also mix in dumbells, tension bands, and an Ab Carver Pro for overall core strengthing!

And, I have a Skier's Edge QS5 Big Mountain Alpine Ski Machine which is an astounding piece of exercise equipment!

This all keeps me in great shape so that I can enjoy Alpine Skiing during the Winter.

Here in Southern California the weather is so conducive to working out outdoors, that an indoor Gym membership (been there, done that!) just was not as convenient nor time effective for me as riding into the hills out my driveway, or setting up the ski machine in the backyard with the stereo system cranked!

If you are serious about optimizing your training results, another highly recommended piece of gear is a high quality Heart Rate Monitor! These are very different than the mere Activity Trackers that are now flooding the market. A good Heart Rate Monitor and software will transform your training!

Also, a few years ago I tried a round of P90X. It was quite effective! It involves following the videos, so I did that indoors. As a consequence, it displaced much of my time being out on the bike in the fresh air. As a result, I looked more "cut", however, my cardio respiratory condition (VO2 Max) came down a little over the course of the 90 days. My Heart Rate Variabiliy (HRV) remained about the same. Overall my fitness level (very good to begin with) remained about the same. I preferred the more cardio oriented outdoor approach.

If you're not active, now is a good time to start!

I've always liked Martial Arts, and generally sucked at any ball-related game.

Did judo my entire life, but had a hip injury that prevents me from keeping being thrown on the mat.

Boxed as an amateur for a couple of years, at a local gym, and then discovered Shotokan-Ryu Karate, which was the discipline I liked best. Keeps me in shape without becoming boring, and works my whole body out, with lots of stretching. It even healed my bad back.

Golf. Yeah, I know... I'm one of those crazy fools who chases a little white ball around an abandoned cow pasture! It is an addicting sport and there are moments when you think to yourself that you should be next in line to qualify for the PGA Tour. Then the next moment, you are driven to your knees in despair, cursing a blue streak, and about ready to put all your clubs on Craigslist or Ebay.
Best round - ever - in my entire life: 82 (one of these days, I'll break 80!)

Bicycle Riding. This is my reborn/born again love from days gone by (the 70's)... I'm not one of those crazy "Lance Armstrong Wannabe's" (as I refer to them). I don't own an $8000 racing bicycle all made out of carbon and titanium or whatever. I refuse to wear any of that tight fitting, lycra/spandex bicycle clothing where people can see my junk outlined in my shorts! Sorry... Ain't happening... But I do go out riding 25-30 miles and do it "old school" style. I wear a simple pair of surfer shorts or swim trunks and a moisture wicking lightweight t-shirt. Adidas running shoes in equally "old school" platform pedals with toe clip cages completes my setup.
My bike? A classic 1985 Fuji Del Rey, 12 speed road bike, heavy gauge steel, 27" tires, Suntour components, and it's built like a tank. I call it my "Craigslist Special", because I got it for such a steal off Craigslist from a local college kid here in town who graduated. From what I remember, it was the college kid's dad's bike new in 1985. It sat in a garage for years and years, ridden a few times by the dad. When the kid went to college, the dad gave him the bike to use. Once the kid graduated, he didn't want the bike anymore and the dad didn't want it back. Soooo... The kid threw it on Craigslist for $150 bucks (seriously - the thing is still MINT condition!). I snatched it up before anyone else could. I had it checked over by a reputable bike shop and they couldn't believe it either. It's like you stepped back in time 30 years ago when you ride it. I love it!
