Does anyone know what material Fender uses for its pickguards? Specifically the Classic Player Baja '60s Telecaster. Is it PVC, vinyl (are they the same?), plastic, acrylic, etc.?

I ask because I'm considering having some art (airbrush) added to mine and would like to ensure the right paint is used. I have no experience in this area.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I can't really answer your main question, but PVC (polyvinylchloride) is one form of vinyl. Other vinyl types include EVA (ethylenevinylacetate) and PEVA (polyethylenevinylacetate).
They all belong to the larger group of plastic materials.
I.e. PVC is a vinyl, and vinyl is a plastic.

Fender has also used bakelite (polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride) pickguards in the past. That's a plastic too, characterized by being quite hard and having a matte look. Think old-fashioned telephones or light bulb sockets.

And on a few special models, other materials have been used, like aluminium and wood.

Thanks Arth1. The information I was able to gather from different sources variously listed PVC, vinyl and plastic as the material used. Your response may explain why.

Arthl is right in his definitions.

There is one consideration, though. I have a white vinyl fence surrounding the yard. While it shares characteristics with other vinyl it is grafetti resistant in that it is not simply coated that way, it is part of the composition. Any paint or stain simply wipes off. My vinyl shed can be painted, and likely so can my mint green scratch plate on the Strat.

I'm of the belief, cost wise, this resistance is not the case with your scratch plate, but I can see an advantage. Of course, should this ever be the case, you will know pretty soon and no harm will be enacted.

Here's wishing you a great paint job on a great axe, Pudbert.

Fender may use any one 6 or more materials for pickguards ranging from PVC, ABS, CPVC, Acrylic, Bakelight, even Celluloid.

In the modern era, the majority are PVC most likely.

Unfortunately, none of them are a good base for paint alone. Some may need to be 'keyed' (lightly scratched) to accept paint while others will need a plastic primer which will adhere to the plastic and also accept paint well.

Most of the materials listed above are not resistant to the solvents in many paints and will deform, or 'dry out' (become brittle) or discolor if exposed to them.

Some of the materials will accept Latex or Acrylic paints, but these paint jobs will not be very durable unless you can clearcoat over them.

cheers!
