I'm watching a story about Arizona's 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who fought a fire. The wind shifted, and, sadly, they lost their lives 4 years ago. A memorial of iron crosses now stands where some fell huddled together, and plaques along the way mark heroic rescuers who tragically fell in their attempt to help those caught with no escape route. Today, firemen (and others) come to pay their respect. In memory, thanks to those who pay homage, the Hotshots live on.

Our city is forever bonded with those fallen firefighters. In 2011 the gigantic hombre-caused Monument Fire threatened the entire town and first responders from all over the nation answered the call for help. The Granite Mountain Hotshots were among them and for two brutal weeks they successfully fought to save us from certain immolation. Some property damage was inevitable but no lives were lost thanks to the dedication of all......

The third photo was taken from my back yard, some three miles from the conflagration's epicenter.

No firefighter will ever pay for a drink in any bar if I happen to be there.

Arjay (with a heartfelt hand salute for those valiant heroes who gave all)

Arjay, thank you for your post, photos, and your fine statement supporting those brave firefighters. I've seen similar challenging work in BC's massive forest country, and I've experienced limited but dangerous firefighting on ship and was saved as a kid in a house fire . No matter, except I too have respect and love for these guys. They are much more than a picture on a TV. They are true heros that make a difference.

FSB
So glad your life and home were spared, Arjay.

Indeed. I believe Alberta had a rough row to hoe last summer. Ironic that such disasters bring out the very best of civilization. In our case, we had many folks who were forced to evacuate and the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, and local church charities stood ready to offer help right from the start. To a cynic such as myself, it brought a tear to my eye (and I feel no shame in admitting that). I tried to volunteer to help the first responders but was (rightfully) told that I was really too old for front-line duty so I did the next best thing -- I went to Walmart and bought $400 worth of bottled water then stopped off at Target and picked up another $400 in T-shirts, underdrawers, and socks. All items desperately in short supply to the firefighters. I happened to meet a couple of the Hot Shot guys while delivering the stuff to the incident command center and what impressed me the most about them was their self-deprecating humor and the absolute conviction that they would beat the fire back, which they did. And they also restored some of my faith in humanity. Truly an epiphany.

I remember watching the story on the news. It was a real tragedy and it tugs at the heart strings how those would-be rescuers fell trying to save their comrades and friends. Those brave men and women work days or weeks in unimaginably harsh conditions of extreme heat, smoke, rough terrain and danger. My hat goes off to them and my prayers go with those who were lost and their loved ones.

This afternoon we're introducing our granddaughter to "Independence Day". She's terrified of monster movies but she loves them just the same.

Many years ago we had our two nephews over for the weekend. You'll likely know the routine.

Tell each one they get to choose one thing each wants to do plus cartoons in the morning and scarey movies at night with uncle. Okay, roller skating and bowling.

Now the movie. Leave 'em alone with opening credits and pop upstairs to get drinks and popcorn. Uh oh! Wrong classic vampire movie! Just as the vampirellas were just about to do their thang I caught it in time. After getting the third degree from the boys asking why they couldn't watch the horror show I promised, we finished our drinks and popcorn, and shuffled off to bed.

At breakfast the kids were still asking while Mrs. FSB gave me the evil eye. Oh well, cartoons bailed me out.

American Cars vs Germany Cars - Sound Exhaust Battle on YouTube
Mostly Mustangs and Camaros compared to M-B AMG, BMW M-Series and a few Audis. My verdict... I have to give it hands-down to good old V8 American muscle. IMO
