NCIS - I know it seems like that's all I watch and it is, pretty much. The only time I turn on a TV is when I'm eating dinner and a 40-some minute show works just right. Including time for dessert. :D

I totally get that, Marky. When I lived on the coast, TV was an afterthought because there was so much other yearlong somewhat fair weather activity to take up one’s interest. That practice would be hard to believe when you factor in the many local stations from the mainland, island, and the Vancouver/Seattle super stations. Throw in today's satellite offerings and massive news coverage of these times and you’ll still see more people outdoors at all times of the day or night, diehards being the exception. Think of it this way. Living on a mountain might find one on the ski hill rather than in front of a tv, or by the ocean on a beach or boat, or in a desert with a 4x4 and so on. Snow mobiles rule here, however, but winter activity often gets curtailed by extreme weather.

Here in the prairies TV is on for most of the day whether it has an audience or not. I believe that is traditionally passed on through the generations. Active families may collectively watch less TV. The opposite is likely true as well. Home entertainment can be addictive too, The winter sees more people indoors for approximately six months
of the year, and along with that there is TV streamed or otherwise.

We have 5 TVs in the house, 4 of which are still hooked up since upgraded cable gear botched one (now that self installed splitters have seen better days). It’s more of an upstairs downstairs bedroom/office convenience. Several PVRs are my friends. I can be selective and watch when and what I want (usually at bedtime). A large older HD projector screen sits downstairs. It is largely unused with few hours on it, which is good because we now use it for concerts, big sporting and special events; but, where we really prefer it is with movies. Sharp resolution? Nope! Not like today’s TVs. Bright? To a fault. Very good but not great, It does have that projected cinematic look with better blacks, more textured faces, and overall a different look that we have become accustomed to. Take the flat screen, digital projector, and tube projector’s best qualities, put them together, and Eureka! Hasn’t happened yet. Like the audio comparisons. it’s a digital world. Both old and new are good, but different. IMHO

That said, I can remember with multiple satellite and network control, I and my hard working crew often had down time. So, to fill creative juices or for entertainment, we searched for international programming to watch. Some was fantastic! We’ve seen, and all agreed, that there were occasions where there was absolutely nothing worthy of our attention. No time for a movie here. Satellites have a lot of unusable and scrambled junk, fragmented data, tons of simultaneous
duplicated channel info., sound bites, off air black, test patterns, white noise, tones, music, text, good and ‘Just another’ newsfeeds, a variety of welcomed and confusing sports, boring politics, business and educational snippets, short term rental time slotted material for those paying for temporary transmission, agencies most of which are on standby like NASA,, repeated failed or required transmissions, rented space to and from the provider, partial mainstream TV shows, and same old same old nothing new broadcasts. You name it. Nothing of interest to watch? Hard to believe, I know. Well, sometimes we were knocked on our rear because we were treated to television that was fantastic! The rest just didn't stand up to the best.

It happened just like the days we’d desperately scramble to find enough worthy news without rehashing old news to fill an hour. Those days are called dog days. Why? Because one could always find a cat, dog, or similar human interest story to fill a lacklustre news day.

Nowadays I find we must be watching a lot of concealed dog days, because the TV is quick to give us repeated and copied presentations that last days and even weeks! Funny how two or more places a world apart have the same dog days and identical repeats or presentations? :P

Thank you, Gary, for your interesting and insightful reply.

I'm always happy to read your take on media. With your diverse background in the field, you have much to share and I enjoy reading it. You've had so many great experiences!

You mentioned old tech vs. new tech and both having good and bad points. Most of us have been programmed to think that newer is always better, IMO. I found it funny that when I installed a plugin package in my DAW there was a plugin named Vinyl. Of course you know what it supposedly does. I say supposedly because I haven't given it a fair shakedown yet because I installed it before I got my good quality studio monitors. I just thought it was kinda funny that we have current tech emulating outdated tech.

CFL
Hamilton TiCats vs Ottawa Red Blacks

Hamilton is first in the East and first in the league. They lost only 3 games this year breaking a team record, and this win 33-12 gives them no losses at home for the regular season, and home advantage for the East Final game before Grey Cup (championship is East versus West). If that’s not enough, clinching the East division was done by a less experienced young backup QB since the QB with much experience (2nd in the league) had been injured for the season early in the 6th of 13 regular games. Here’s the kicker. Tiger Cats’ first year CFL coach is two games away from winning the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary, Alberta, Sunday, November 24. Keith Urban is the Halftime talent. :D

You might want to watch the Grey Cup this year. If anything, if Calgary wins the West division they’ll be playing at home likely against the best team in the league. That’ll be a great introduction to the CFL for those who haven’t experienced it.

Thanks, Marky. You’ve got that right about the new versus old tech. Don’t get me wrong, I really like working in digital, and it’s cool when it’s not skipping (What? That can’t happen! ). Just joking. Well, that’s what the ballyhoo was when I bought my first CD player.

Here’s an interesting article you all might like:

https://benchmarkmedia.com/blogs/applic ... efeat-them

I’ve heard or read about the Vinyl plugin, Marky. Didn’t pay much attention though as I have Sony’s Audiostation, and having a scratch remover and noise reduction is handy. I have restored irreplaceable damaged collected records and tape recordings. Vinyl is, for the most part if I am correct, an interesting opposite concept, however. It’s likely you can add rumble or stylus noise, scratches, or something like that. A needle drop would be a great effect if well placed. Don’t know how popular that would be as my thinking for effect is it might work, but how many of this new generation ever heard a record? Would they accept what we have for years? You’ve probably heard about the plugins simulating tape too. I can always run digital into or onto my tape recorders or into and out of the decks back to the DAW or CD recorder I suppose. Hmm. I wonder if there’s a plug-in called Crystal Radio?
All this digital analog mixing is not new by any means. Many producers, engineers, supergroups including the Stones, and other artists have preferred an analog warmth added to their digital recordings, and analog preamps and amps have been added to studio mixes before, during, or after the recording, sometimes along with tape. Almost never does procedure or hands on dictate this; although, it could. The first thought is, “How do I want it to sound?”. The second thought should be, “If I do this, will I get what I want?” If it’s all digital, fine. All analog fine. Hybrid using both. Fine too. The weak spot is that digital is not a mature format and standards are inconsistent. A large amount of variables. That’s true in video and audio. Even pros agree to disagree. The proof is in the pudding.

True to the topic, “What are you watching?” I thought I’d add this for your enjoyment:

I'm not watching anything but I would like to give my condolences to my Yankee fan friends. That was a tough loss in the bottom of the 9th but, there's always next year. :( Spoken by a true Cubs fan, me. :)
