Long run cables and joining connectors from a surround sound system, and related tape and EQ meters as I locate a drop in one channel’s levels problem. :? I used to like the little lipstick tone generator I once used. One of those once in a blue moon tools. It was XLR however. I’d like to see it now.

This series has been around for years, and somehow I never saw it. Maybe it wasn’t around these parts before the provider changed hands Cool show looking for artifacts. :D

That's my kind of show too, FSB. I find them very interesting.
We watched Goodfellas, again.

Yeah, they keep your attention huh. Marky? Sometimes, I look over my shoulder to see if those hunters are checking me out as I age.
I also have some great old shows that I recently dusted off and pulled out, with crazy funny commercials from yesteryear. Watched Wyatt Earp (Hugh O’Brian). I seem to remember (although I won’t admit it) when the Colt Buntline Special was a much cherished cap gun. The gunslingers should have shot him just for looking so good. Looking forward to watching my old collection of Julia Childs, and the original TV celebrity Chefs from the past with their classic recipes. I got some tapes that were my father’s so they’ll get a once over, or maybe not. Then it’s back to downsizing. :P

Speaking of old tapes... something like 15 years ago, I had all our VHS tapes of my son growing up transferred to DVD. I heard that a VHS starts degrading after about 10 years and I wanted to keep these memories forever. It saves a lot of space too. I don't remember how many tapes I had (I always recorded in SD) but I ended up with 17 DVDs.

So that's what we are watching. Great memories! :D

Transferring to DVD is definitely the answer, Marky. Works great for personal videos for sure. Copyright becomes a questionable changing and confusing problem for the other stuff as the law varies from country to country even with personal use. But, that’s another issue I’ll pass on for discussion as it has been addressed elsewhere.

Many may or may not be aware that industry has in place a system that can crawl your data and generally tell if you have illegal copywritten downloads or illegal dubs on audio or video. Worse they could do harm to your software or equipment so prosecution is a whole other matter, innocent, ethical, or not. A lot of media can have one believing it is authorized with the chance it may not be. I saw it in my profession from both sides. If you have purchased CDs you likely have some fraudulent ones. It was a major problem from discs made in Holland (as one, but not the only, example) in the 80s. DVDs go without saying. Downloads were and are questionable, and we know in the 90s copyright laws were extremely confusing and misleading. Policies, law, promotion and suppositions were a blur. A lot of fake news circulated.

Long story short, they don’t have enough resources to convince authorities to take action, but more powerful international trade agreements are being looked at and considered as a solution for federal/local enforcement soon to be coming to a neighbourhood near you or not.

Fortunately, refraining from illegal dubs, I’ve just discovered today that legal format shifting has been late in coming to this country (2012), and according to a reputable source, it has finally been made available here in Canada to include owned per se (not borrowed) copywritten material for personal use only (unless more grey area changes have come about). Not sure how that will be accountable, but it doesn’t concern me considering. Who’s going to store junk? :P We’ve finally joined the world albeit 6 years ago. Funny how announcements in our favour are subdued compared to those not in our favour. That means VHS to DVD legally. Yippee! I almost said Yahoo
Thanks, Marky. Your post made me look up the law again with technology and monopolies being what they are today. That’s a huge benefit to me with a cabinet full of old tape including Seattle’s Seafair unlimited hydroplane race, a rare Irish hurling championship match, baseball, football, and boxing great players documentaries to say the least. Throw in a few pirate (not pirated LOL) movies and other adventures. What’s not to like?

As for longevity, depending on what resource one uses for their information, the question of longevity with media is all over the place. I have crap tapes and tapes that are extremely old and play well. In fact newer ones often made compromised the build and formula.

My take is that the equipment the format plays on is more likely to take a hike first. Like my pro video tapes (expensive to dub if even possible). I remember the difficult search and getting from out of province a rare projector for a 2x2 full frame camera glass slide show at work. It was an early common crystal clear amazing photography format for research and other things like scenery and portraits. The clarity blew me away with high
resolution and great contrast/brightness ratio on metalwork and scenery. These pictures and show were about bridge building in what was then a generation ago in the unpopulated north. One more example in how we now try to make digital what came before, but I digress.

You might like this media longevity article (one of many of course).

Cheers, and thanks.

Happy dubbing and viewing gang, :D
