Local late News. The other night two gang members were killed in a local restaurant. Verdict today: They had a shoot out in the restaurant downtown. Not good. The Roaring 20s are back except the 20 precedes 19 (2019).

The Eighties. (CNN)

For the most part pretty good. First I'll say that I understand and respect that each generation, for the most part, sees music before and after as "my music". Okay. I get that. Who am I to say today's music is not great, with exception. If you like it, love it or hate it that's your thing. But, when Chuck D (MC Public Enemy) stated that 'It (Hip Hop/Rap) took the sounds of the 60s & 70s and brought it to the forefront', I laughed so hard I almost ended up back in the cardiac ward. Nice of him to take the credit. I'm still ROTFL. More like they moved the superstars to the background on a sample.
It was also said that, unlike the 60s, the 80s was for everyone. The documentary also made a point that more or less politics was a Hip Hop thang. Really :?: Too bad he wasn't there. The Temptations with Ball Of Confusion were. The 60s and 70s had it's poetry, mix of races, genders, generations, peace, love, war, hate for the other guys in the White House, a Cold War, crossovers, the drug scene, the controversial folk scene, feminism, streets filled with protest signs and raised fists, riots and burning of Detroit and LA, the terrible shootings at colleges, influence from the hood even then, cults and cult movies, fashion, beads instead of chains, vans instead of low riders, acid graphics instead of graffiti, gangs and homegrown terrorists, and . . . Oh, and one more thing, the 80's music video scene that helped a struggling industry was not new. For TV, yes; however, generations before got the same elaborate videos to introduce artists in the movie theaters. Decades before Much Music. The racial controversy in the entertainment world existed then as in TV. Both addressed the injustice. Even electronic music was part of experimenting with early stereo. The difference between a person's musical taste and history may not jibe. It certainly didn't in this documentary.

Amazing how so many are quick to take credit and to compare with no respect for the original foundations that opened the door. Next thing you know we'll be told that sampling came with Hip Hop. Nope! Just the technique and style. Yes there is new. There is always new. There always has been new. There will always be new. Nothing new there. :P
One thing for sure. Today's music can thank yesterday's, not the other way around. I just chortle every time a hip hopper that takes the liberty of telling us that they or their group are bigger than music itself. That's not necessary. IMHO. Of course, we have the luxury of V Jays who know nothing else to tell us of the current trend contribution. That's almost as bad as the 50s (and following) stuffed shirt entertainers and pop D Jays that knocked Rock 'N Roll without looking outside their environment. Conversely, I'm not qualified to do the opposite either; but, I'm lucky to have experienced both, and much of it close up, so that's in my pocket. I'd prefer for the public to enjoy the music for what it truly is, and to spread the word so it's got credibility, and that is no doubt, pretty big.

Here's a tip for Hip Hoppers. Legends are made they are never born.
Make it your own. 8)

Peace. Out.

Note: Rev' J seems to have a pretty good handle on this. YMMV

I'm going to show my age here. I remember when the Dee Jay would honk a horn if the new song got accepted and hit a gong or boing if it was a dud. Bring back the gong.

Thinking of our great past member. Roy (aka Martian).

So now, after a little home made pizza and a little vino, I am watching season 1’s episodes of My Favirite Martian. :D
