Great Beatles video, Paul. Love those old studios. You can learn a lot about the production of a song or album by taking into account what was used.

Having worked with a lot of reel tape both professionally and at home I took interest in that audio tape in the video.

On this side of the pond we used what happened to be easily available (and good) such as Ampex and 3M (Scotch) to a great degree (Maxell and Sony to a lesser degree. Sony’s SLH was notoriously famous for prematurely wearing out tape heads including mine). YMMV. We were constantly in contact with friends, associates, and distributors whenever brands, types, and formulas were under development or change. I mention this because the Abbey Studios video shows EMI tape for the master recording. What relationship does that have? The original White Album has print through on some but not all tracks. Amongst the posts that I’ve attached you’ll find more on the EMI tape, and how it, the Beatles, and Trident Studios does and doesn’t relate in the music history of one of the great albums of the 20th Century. For personal use, I used to like Agfa tape readily found in England in the 60s; but, not easily here in Canada at the time.
