Nice Videos, Paul. Paul McCartney is an all-time favorite of mine.

I've been really listening to a lot of Beatles, or related things lately, I think because it's generally positive and not dark, which has been a lot of my musical tastes for years. Mentally, I could use a lot of that lately, so I think that's why I've been gravitating towards that. Sometimes, you just need to kind of chill out for a bit, have a laugh, whatever.

I never took to the Beatles at first even having been to Liverpool in ‘65. My hometown was like little England full of Tudor pubs, Fish and Chip shops, Tea houses, Double Deckers, English candy, bakery, and British Woolen clothing stores. There are castle like structures , and, with a lot of English, Scottish, and Irish inhabitants, there is a whole lot more British influence and promotion with similar weather to boot. Union Jacks are everywhere in the city named after Queen Victoria. Queen Elizabeth parked her yacht Brittania downtown in the inner harbour. The Beatles from the beginning were everywhere, all the time, non-stop. :? Jamming meant it had to be the Beatles, and not the Animals or . . . School mates took in the famous first concert riot in Vancouver. Meanwhile, the Seattle and California scene were an influence that was intermittent throughout smashing the British Invasion when the hippie movement moved in with an American flavour. Then the three J’s “ Jimi, Jefferson, and Janis” took over. :D
Since then I took time to re-visit the Beatles, and recently the new satellite Beatles’ radio station and streaming has tweaked my interest even more. John and George are my favourite Beatles, probably because I couldn’t get a high school date unless I was a fan of Ringo or Paul. :P
Now, if my name was Ringo or Paul and if I had a violin bass that might have changed things.

I get that, Paul. I suppose I'm a blues man since I play blues about 80% of the time but, lately, I've been playing more classic rock, and I learned the Beatles song Let It Be. Beautiful lyrics, IMO.

The funny thing is that even though I knew who the Beatles were as a kid, and I'm sure liked their music, I really didn't start seriously getting into them until the past couple of years. I mean seriously listen to them, with also the experience of a musician that's now been playing for 30 years. I really understand what they were trying to do, and I get it. Another person that I understand more as an adult, or at least one in their now late 40's, and with the musician experience I have, is Bob Dylan. The lyrics and all of that.

When I was 15, and starting to get into rock music, I guess from the 60's and 70's, my thing was (and still is to this day,) Led Zeppelin. I was a hard core Led Zeppelin freak. That's all I wanted to listen to, and what really got me into playing bass in the first place. The strange thing is wasn't John Paul Jones at first, because I didn't even know what a bass guitar really even was when I started, other than just a guitar with four bigger strings on it, but it was hearing Jimmy Page for the first time. I know that sounds ridiculous with the bass thing, but I had no musical inclination at all, I was talked into getting a bass by a friend who played guitar, so that's how that started. Ironic, the last I heard he had quit playing guitar and got into paintball shooting tournaments around 25 years ago, and I'm a musical lifer. I was artistic, though. I liked to draw and things like that.

I've also been getting back into the blues a bit, as well. That, and old school jazz, like Thelonious Monk, and Mingus. I know that's not much to do with guitar, other than a few jazz guitarists, but as for the bass, there's a treasure trove of stuff to hear. Then again, sometimes you can get ideas from other instruments, than the one you typically play. Transpose horn parts to guitar, that sort of thing.

I’m like you, Paul. Creativity is a funny thing. You can never get enough, and it’s cool to discover new and old art in whatever form you favour.

I agree about the Beatles. They did a lot for the development of music. I think the guys behind their board (and those for other bands), people like the 5th Beatle (Sir George Martin) had major influence too. Consider this. The engineers and money men, as always, had to be on top of it both technically and distribution wise. Sometimes they got it, sometimes they didn’t.

Thelonius and Mingus. Good taste, Paul. I’ve sat in with a jazz pianist, jazz quartets, and big bands. While on travels I got to jam free jazz off hours in a lounge with a bunch taking a break from the Jan Garber orchestra tour. The band ran from the early 20s up to today gathering no less than 66 charted hits! Not so much to my taste, but that is hard to argue with, especially since there were music restrictions during the war. Needless to say, I have a collection of jazz and I like all sorts, old and new. I heavily invested in oddities like Krupa, Rich, Morello, Bellson, and others. I have what is believed a copy of the only LP recording ever made with battling solos of Krupa and Rich together for example. Apparently, it was difficult to get them together in studio because of scheduling and other commitments. The rare opportunity arose in a theatre when they both showed up in the same city at the same time. It is interesting because the record leaves it up to you to decide who is playing what. I saw Rich live twice, and I believe I know from their style, but there is some doubt. I have Morello on a quad reel to reel which I no longer use that way, and the rest of my collection runs the gamut including picked over 78 RPMs. Milt Hinton, Ray Brown, and Ron Carter are my favorite double bass players. So many great vocalists, but I miss not being able to hear Amy Winehouse fulfill her potential.
I believe any of us involved with music have appreciation that opens doors to discovery at an early age or a later age. Hands on experience at whatever level certainly gives more food for thought, and these Forum(s) here at Fender are a great way to learn from and discuss with others, and I am continuously appreciating that. I will never get enough. :D

I've actually always been into different types of music, even though my main thing would go along with the rock genre, if you want to call it that. When I was a kid, I listened to a lot of country music, and watched things like "Hee Haw" on TV. Then I got into Top 40/Pop music in my preteens/early teens, which at that time was during the early to mid 80's, which was pretty much New Wave music. As I got older, I started to creep over to the rock station, although I did have older siblings that were into that, as well. I can say I've heard Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" on all of the formats, because of my older brother, and in general. 8-Track, vinyl, cassette, CD, and MP3. I remember those big, furniture-looking console stereos that had a record player and 8-track, from back in the day. He had one, which I think he got from my parents. I remember hearing Pink Floyd on one of those when I was a kid.
