I think primitive would be correct, Paul. Different facilities had monitors of various kinds. A lot of horns. Stadiums certainly had that, but they still didn’t address self monitoring on stage. There was a lot of feedback problems in those days too.

1961 came and Judy Garland was the first to have a dedicated monitor, but not with proper miking and on stage monitors similar to what we know today. Bill Hanley of Woodstock fame engineered with Neil Young the first practical modern day monitoring.

While wedges do a great job as intended, IEM (In Ear Monitoring) is a love hate relationship depending on the mix, the reception. the audio op, and the one listening to it. That said, floor monitoring has similar concerns, although the system is wired for the most part.

The problem with floor monitors like wedges is that they can cause hearing loss and often those in the band that don’t need to hear another’s bleeded mix but, unfortunately, do.

The volume today is short of excruciating. I went to a wedding where a large band was so loud that there was nowhere, including the hallway, where one could have a conversation. I can handle loud. I am loud. However, when the waitress and bartender can’t hear the orders that’s treading dangerous territory IMHO. Oh! The band had IEMs. Hmmmm.

If some sense isn’t made of the appropriate volume levels the crowd (and, perhaps, ex-band member) will have to do what happened when Harlequin played a concert for the local School For The Deaf. The revellers will have lost the ability to hear the music, let alone the nuances, and they’ll have to feel the beat of speaker cabinets. That puts a whole new meaning to speaker cabinets.
