For some reason I managed to turn on the Toronto news, and there was my former boat the 95 foot ketch HMCS Oriole sailing into Toronto (for the first time in 25 years) to be with the Tall Ships for the Redpath Waterfront Festival.

The Oriole IV was originally the pride of Toronto’s yacht club, built in Toronto in 1921, and (because of a strike in Toronto) was completed in Neponset, Massachusetts. It was the Royal Canadian Yacht Club flagship 1924-28, and in 1941 she was donated to the Sea Cadets and Navy for officer training where she basically remained in Victoria, BC, and went to Lunenburgh, NS for refit last year. She found her way to Nova Scotia in 2017 to celebrate Canada’s 150th, and in 2018 the Oriole officially transferred to Halifax, NS and the east coast Navy. Those childhood days as a cadet and a reservist in my adult life were some of my most enjoyable ones sailing along the Canadian and American west coast, even in rough weather. Nice to see her still appreciated though. Three years from now she’ll be 100!

Watching back to back CFL games with both present and former hometowns playing in each. Winnipeg Blue Bombers win against Montreal Canadians with a score of 59 to 10 in an away game! Tonight the new South Dakota QB for Winnipeg Chris Streveler (17th for QB 2018 NFL Draft pick and rated 20 for 101 College QBs) became the first QB in CFL history to get 3 touchdowns in his first two starts after coming out of college. Easy right? Not when the game and field is different and there is a learning curve.

Next up: Hamilton TiCats in Edmonton to play the Eskimos. Last time Edmonton played it was here and a thunder and lightning storm turned the game into a record 6 hour game which ended early the next day!

Guess what. The weather in Edmonton could be a repeat as the satellite weather looks ugly. Could be another long night or the PVR will be my friend. Let’s see if the Edmonton fans are up to it like they did here.

Right now I’m watching the Nautilus. That’s not a movie or a submarine. It’s my new battery charger for the car (and the boat tha I don’t have).

It has intelligence built in with a visual display. That’s more than I can say for the individual that didn’t quite get his trunk closed all the way yesterday.

It’s gone from a dead battery to 90% in about 4 hours. It’ll probably be another 4 hours to charge that last 10%!
