Wild Archaeology

This episode is about Inuvialuit and a Richards Island Northwest Territories village archaeological site (estimated to be 5 centuries old) where the flats are covered in Beluga whale bones from a time when a line of kayakers would drive the pod ashore. On a good summer day they might get 40 or 50 and the meat was stored in the site to return and retrieve in the winter. 200-300 years ago It would have seen as many as 500 people (the largest gathering in the entire Canadian Arctic). The cool thing is they built driftwood houses with a tunnel entrance dug under the deeply dug house and the cold wind would have been directed to the tunnel which then could keep the sod covered house above warm with only an oil lamp! :shock:
. . . and some of us worry about a furnace going out. They call that progress. :lol:
