Hang on to those rare wood guitars and take care of them.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Woods will soon be replaced altogether by nanobot-impregnated composites that can be programmed to assume a variety of colors and grains. Thus, you'll be able to buy a Strat that one day wears a solid-color custom finish and rosewood neck but by the miraculous keystrokes of a digital controller, the next day will appear as sunburst with a maple board.

Mark my words.

And it will most likely sound like shizza! Technology and microchips still haven't been able to replace a Vintage Fender Tube Amp tone wise! Ever play a Rainsong acoustic? Sounds ok, but you won't mistake it for a new Martin or Taylor!

Au contraire. Molecular density (which in large measure, determines a material's audible resonance) will be but one of a number of adjustable parameters that nanobots will determine. Thus, there will likely be "good" programming and "cheap" programming. Corona will employ the former while the latter will be left to the offshore sub-brands.

Welcome to the 'brave new world', sportsfans.

It is a strange evolution when it comes to wood choice and availability to be sure.

As a kid I had a total mahogany acoustic. I didn't appreciate it as I probably should have. Mahogany was everywhere. Doors, furniture, bases for awards, crib boards, and more, and this was the good stuff that brought us to where we are today.

I recently had to add custom trim to older mahogany kitchen cabinets. Stain matching was hard enough, but wood matching was a compromise, and the latter came from the Philippines. Pretty good but not exact.

I remember buying hifi speakers in the 70s that were available in oak or American black walnut. The walnut was at that time less expensive than the oak. The oak was the name of the day. American black walnut is not as plentiful now. Today's price? The other way around, the last I looked.

Then there was our California redwood waterbed frame and headboard. Beautiful. but gone with the waterbed. My mistake.

I have real maple hardwood floors, but engineered hardwood is now available. While engineered has its benefits, real hardwood floors (depending on condition) may become an asset.

But, back to guitars. Enjoy the wood that you have. It's a treat that is meant to be appreciated. The wood will likely increase in value, and availability is sure to change even if it is common. Besides, some of us simply appreciate old school craftsmanship. IMHO. :D YMMV

Great article.

About 12 years ago I bought a new Martin D-16GT that had mahogany back and sides with especially nice grain. It also had a Micarta composite material fingerboard and bridge rather than ebony or rosewood. It also had a composite nut and saddle instead of bone - Corian, if I remember correctly.

At the time I was a little miffed that it wasn't all-wood but I tried to be open-minded about it. I understood the reason for the Micarta and I still really liked the feel and sound of the guitar.

Even with the composite fingerboard it still wasn't cheap! It was a little more than a grand including the case and it didn't have a pickup. (I had a LR Baggs Element installed a couple years later.)

I still have the guitar and it's aged really well, opening up nicely. The Micarta has held up really well too - I've worn away some of the frets but the Micarta looks perfect. It's taught me that a combination of great natural tonewood and manufactured material can be a good compromise.

Sometimes I'm amused that mahogany used to be considered a second-rate tonewood. Then I play a vintage Brazilian rosewood acoustic and think "Man... I need one of these..." The low end of has a tightness that I've never heard a mahogany body have. Good luck finding a Brazilian rosewood acoustic you don't have to sell a kidney to afford.

Welcome, ufront. Great post.

I agree that manufactured material can sometimes add to or replace the original's purpose. Note that I said sometimes. All too often though replacement material will be sold at a similar market price or it can unecessarily artificially inflate the original price. The opposite is also true. There are times that the original may be rare or no longer available as new, and there are times when the original is due for a desirable update.

In the end cosmetics may or may not have personal appeal, and the sound will speak to the individual. With the right choice it's all good. IMHO.

Cheers!
