....I played my first gig. in the spring of that year, some buddies and I from grade school just decided to play together. in early summer there were 4 of us still doing it. we got asked to play for a church picnic. we learned a dozen or so songs, and off we went. we played for about 2 hours, so I'm sure we repeated a few tunes-after all, most songs at that time weren't much over the 2 minute mark.

as luck would have it, there was a tribute to a local musician going on in a building next door. someone heard us and invited us to play. we did, and I still remember the ovation we received. the musicians were very welcoming, and offered us guidance in our career. at this point, we weren't even sure that we were a band yet!

since we were all about 12 years old, we couldn't play in bars. we played a lot of weddings and private parties, and a few times we played in front of thousands at city sponsored events. we learned a variety of songs, from Tijuana brass style, to the bossa nova craze, thru standards and a few rock songs as well.

during high school we still performed together. while friends were making about a dollar an hour someplace, we would play a party at someplace nice, get fed, and walked out with between 25-50 bucks each. unfortunately we went our separate ways after graduation. I played in a few bands after that, and hardly ever played guitar from around 1978-2000.

I've gigged with a friends over the last years, and realized how much I miss it. I still play at least an hour a day, and have a lot of great memories.

50 years- a long strange trip indeed....

Congrats on the anniversary, Phreddy! I am a little younger than you, but I'm still old enough to realize how fast time can fly.

I played in several bands as a college student and a young adult and the (relatively few) performances that went well remain among my happiest memories. I was also fortunate enough to have a band just a few summers ago that went into the recording studio and performed at a local music fest showcasing amateur talent. Right now I'm pretty busy with work and being the father of two small kids, but I'm hoping to get to the point where I have the time to rehearse and perform in front of people again.

Could the time be right for you to take on a new musical project???

Congrats with the anniversary. 8)

This month now is my 28th anniversary when I bought my first bass and amplifier. I was 16 years old and I bought a Peavey Fury bass (it was the cheapest one in the store, since I didn't even know I was going to stick with it) and a Fender Sidekick 30 amp. It's hard to believe that it's been that long, sometimes.

thanks for the kind responses. some days the music is the only thing that keeps me sane-either listening or playing. I am lucky enough to have an understanding spouse!

it's cool to see people here who have been playing for a while now. your kind words and helpful responses make this my favorite forum to visit.

stay in tune my friends

Great story phreddy. You were gigging at the age of 12! Congrats!

I got my first guitar, a hand me down nylon string Framus when I was 14 (54 years ago). They would have paid me to not play back then..

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Speaking of, today (as of this post), it is exactly 50 years since Beatles' "Revolver" was released in the US.

Very impressive, especially in how well you did.

For me, one more year to go for 50 in Rock, but my first gig was nowhere near as impressive. However, we decided to stick it out, learn from the experience and improve.
