not to dissuade anyone from getting a professional setup, but with a $2 action gauge and an understanding on what you're doing, you can do a pretty good job yourself!

Granted, I'm pretty handy and I like doing things myself, but I've setup all my own electrics and acoustic guitars and they all came out fine... and certainly much much better than how they were out of the box.

I had one setup done when I was just a kid. I was startled by the price they charged me so I learned to do my own and have never paid anyone to set up my guitars since. I am able to get them exactly how I like them. The key is doing the steps in the right order. I always start with relief first because it will affect other parameters but those other parameters should not affect relief, given consistent string gauge and tuning.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Regarding electronic... I'm not so sure adding low end electronic to an already low end guitar is actually adding value... guess everyone has to think about this and decide what they are looking for.

Thank you to everyone who responded with their suggestions. Definitely going to look at Yamaha. What's ironic is that my first "real" guitar was a Yamaha acoustic that I think I paid $75 for new. That was probably in the very early eighties (wow), and I still have it. The Yamaha has aged incredibly. It sounds full, rich, and warm. The sound just booms out of it, but with remarkable clarity. It was sheer luck, but a great purchase that will probably last a lifetime.
