To quote our own ForumAdmin:

Political and/or religious postings are strongly discouraged here as this sort of discussion frequently leads to strong disagreement amongst forum members -- and hence is quite contrary to our goal of providing a fun, family-oriented musical instrument enthusiast community. If you wish to debate political and religious topics we encourage you to seek out an appropriate community elsewhere on the Internet to do so.

That statement can be found right here in the Fender Forums Code Of Conduct thread.

I encourage all members to think about the future of our community before posting further on hot button topics as has been happening lately.
The expression of sympathy and compassion during the Dallas thing was most definitely appropriate.
When the thread morphed into a political discussion, that was when it became inappropriate for this forum.

I have been on the internet for a long time, most of it on guitar boards.
I have seen boards curl up and die over this same exact sort of thing.
That's right. Curl up and die ... as in they no longer exist due to lack of participation because aggravated bickering drove the majority away.
In every case there was a month or two of boasting by those who pushed everyone else away.
Lots of patting each other on the back for the several who hung around, proud of their victory.
Then what happened? Death of the forum in every single case.

We also have some Police hate related undercurrents mingling with everything.
I don't see any of this as being good for the overall health of this discussion forum.
It's not my place to tell anyone what to do here.
I simply hope people will pause and consider.

I think our old friend from Twin Falls, the proprietor of the precursor to this forum, proved beyond all doubt that strict adherence to anti-politic and anti-religion and anti-personal-bashing rules are The Key to keeping a board alive over the long haul.

I am asking people to police themselves.

I don't like the way things are starting to smell around here.
I am catching the scent of trouble coming.

Food for thought.

Nice Plea I get it, and I try to stay away from some topics as I think I know where they will end up. I did not even reply to the Dallas thing as I was sure it would be trouble at some point.
Good luck on your mission sir

Matt, I respect you as a longtime Member and Contributor here...

I suspect you may find my post offensive or directed specifically at you, if so, I apologize beforehand, it isn't.

But I gotta ask: "Did you get a Bowl of Soup with that Soapbox... ???"

I hear what you're saying, and may even be with you in Spirit, but not in Principal...

IIRC, we were all req'd. to Read and Acknowledge the Forum Code of Conduct as a pre-requisite of joining.

Further, as you yourself quote: "Political and/or religious postings are strongly discouraged here... ".

My Merriam-Webster indicates that there is a distinct difference between 'strongly discouraged' and 'forbidden'.

If you, or anyone else were assigned some special police duties by the Moderators, or elected Hall Monitor, I missed the announcement and/or the Vote.

I am against Prior Restraint in most forms (as is the Constitution).

I believe that public debate and the exchange of ideas in Political Matters is some of the most important debate we as citizens can undertake.

Admittedly, Political Correctness would warrant silence on these issues.

Forget about Political Correctness.

Stifling this debate allows the Govt. and the Parties to determine what we do, or do not, know.

Looking at the way both major political parties have manipulated the current election campaign so far, it seems that the need for such public debate is stronger than ever before.

We all know that most here play well with others, but that a relative few don't. One assumes that any such subject(s) here are expressed as opinion and that opposing opinions are given the same respect. It may be wishful thinking to expect some members to do so, but that's why your mouse goes where you tell it to... one can simply avoid any such threads.

If the Moderators step-in, that's different, they're the Law. Members can either abide or leave.

Given that this is the General Discussion Forum, and many more wildly unrelated topics are, and have been, discussed. I have no issue with some political comments or threads. Many people don't have the time or the inclination to search out, or frequent, a more targeted forum. Plus, seeing many people's expressed ideas on other subjects gives us a more rounded understanding of that Member as a person.

If one doesn't like the subject, they skip over it.

And, if one doesn't like the contributor, they go to the User Control Panel, under Options, select Friends and Foes, then Manage Foes, list the person's screen name and their post will be ignored.

cheers!

Debates are IMHO a healthy practice. Arguments can, however, be another issue altogether. I believe every person is entitled to their own opinion, and it should be heard or stated if it adds or relates to the topic. Actually, it seems that all topics here work that way. I think the problem we run into is that some people like to throw stones, some people throw the sensitivity cards down. while others profess that they and only they are the know it all great Wiz.

There are benefits to a good debate from which one's opinion and knowledge can grow. I agree with the statement made about abstaining from a topic should the direction turn out to be one that becomes distasteful in your belief.

Perhaps, we should remember that the family and mixed company approach is a good one to follow. I'd like to think we have an obligation to set good examples for others, especially youth to follow. We are fortunate to have new members and that alone is a good reason to encourage a positive vibe.

I suggest that we can beat up a topic or rescue it. But, in the end I believe in all cases it comes down to one word.

Note: The above meets the debate example that I am presenting here. I do not expect all to agree with my writing. It would be appreciated though. And that's my point. I'm perfectly fine with another's opposing view. I might even find common ground or discover a new view on things. Enjoy this Forum. have fun, and allow others to do the same. Just my 2 cents. :D

+1

An adage we should all strive to espouse.

Censorship yeah of abusive natured callouts, not of debates, otherwise a huge chunk of sixties music and punk would-be be consigned to the " you cant say that here"
Not enough musicians shouting from the rooftops, far as i can see.

I'm with you as well 100%
I'm finding myself utilizing the 'ignore person' and 'ignore topic' features more and more, both here and on a couple of other forums. My visits and choices of threads to post to are becoming less frequent as a result of what you're alluding. I'm sure I'm not alone and equally sure some will respond with "who cares?"

Lightnin, there is a 15 year old inside me typing feverishly.
Fortunately, I no longer listen to him very often.

You came this close to baiting me.

Not trying to bait anyone !

As I originally said: "I suspect you may find my post offensive or directed specifically at you, if so, I apologize beforehand, it isn't."

My post reflects my views on restricting the content of the Forum, nothing more. It was NOT about you in any way !

My last word is that I think you underestimate the strength and intelligence of the community if you feel it has to be 'glued together' by censoring content. I respect, but do not agree with your plea.

Peace !!

Frankly, the lounge is out of order, period. Why point out only one of the waaaaay off topic subjects. IMO, this is no place for obituaries and other nonsense topics that fill the lounge these days. Some of the other sections are out of order too, and everyone has a stupid, fifth grade excuse as to why they do what shouldn't be done. Prefacing an off topic subject with "OT" doesn't make it right.
