Good morning, everyone, and happy Saturday.

Watch out for those skeeters, FSB. Do your's carry West Nile like some do here?

Yes, they do, Marky. We have a pretty good, but not perfect, program to limit or eliminate skeeters
in city limits. In the past, controversial malathion spraying with pickup truck guns would travel the streets at night. I believe some other chemical is used in time of high mosquito trap count; but, we used to be able to opt out a small surrounding area (controversial to other neighbours who may want Monsanto). Today mostly dragonflies and lady bugs are released by the thousands, and it’s helping greatly. Now we have days, months, and seasons mosquito free. Still, as with all insects, it’s a toss up. Beware of brown ladybugs though. Some can bite.

Reports are that the West Nile virus is seen to be working it’s way west from Manitoba. We presently have it in all provinces east of us.

I’m surprised to learn that you have it in Arizona. We never had mosquitoes of any kind on Vancouver Island AFAIK; but, that may have changed with the climate or, perhaps, it exists with a lot of difference in the island’s topography. Maybe, the salt air is an advantage.

Here skeeters are Manitoba’s unofficial Air Force with air bases in Northern Ontario, and then the dive bombing wasps arrive at end of summer.
We use electronic tennis racquets to zap those at close contact. They should televise that sport.

 I'd pay to see that.

We have plenty of skeeters here.

"Mosquitoes are becoming more and more of an issue every year. Phoenix recently ranked 20 on the top 50 mosquito cities list, according to Orkin.com."

"Recently, Maricopa County confirmed the first West Nile virus-positive mosquito of the season. A sample was taken from a mosquito in the east Valley.

There have been about 85 cases of the West Nile virus per year reported in Arizona over the last 10 years, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." :x

Yikes! Pretty high.

Skeeter stats are hard to pin down, Marky. Area size, water or no water resources, population, and defensive practices all play a part. I know we live in the largest Canadian city affected, in a large province with a reputation for the most problem, and we live in one of the key areas straddled with similar states, provinces and territories, north, south, east, and west. In our case, also because of equine encephalitis, we have always taken steps against those critters. In the city the problem has declined, but outside the city it’s a battle that varies.

Lyme disease is increasing as a bigger risk and heading west. Now that local mosquito control is better, a lot of concentration is going to Lyme. Our mosquito reputation is being passed on, but still a concern. I know Zika, malaria, and such are more of a concern with higher skeeter counts coming from south of you and the difference in landscape in the U.S. It only takes one bite, however. Time to increase human population to lessen the odds of that. Rotten skeeters.

Some Skeeter stats:
Currently:

A particular high year of West Nile:
https://www.gov.mb.ca/health/wnv/stats2003.html

I wonder how they deal with the increased risk in the bayou and other swamp land. I’m sure that must be a bone of contention.

A belated good morning to all.

Thanks for the skeeter stats, FSB. Looks like you have plenty of those little buggers.

Good morning Lizards. The start of a new week, and a new beginning of the rest of your life.

I wish you a good one. :D
FSB

Mine’s starting off with fresh ground coffee, Canadian light rye toast, and Scottish Champagne Marmalade from the Italian Deli.

Ciao Lasses and Laddies.
