It’s a beautiful sunny morning and above 30°F / -1°C. Still lots of knee high snow in the yard though. I have a vinyl shed but it comes with a metal clad door which freezes shut in the winter. Maybe, I’ll try opening it today so the Christmas stuff can get out of the basement.
Have a good morning and a terrific day.

Good morning, Paul and Lizards everywhere. Happy Thursday!

My new (refurbished) laptop arrives today. I found the same model that Max destroyed, on Amazon. I'm thinking that, if I swap hard drives, it should be exactly like my old one. Does that sound right to you?

Good morning,

Laptop should work, if the components are the same. I had to replace the system board and processor in my old laptop,(long story involving water) the system board I bought had a different wifi card plugged in so I had to change drivers. Now for the bad news, Windows sees a different serial number and processor id and constantly "nags" me that the copy of windows on it may not be "genuine". It's over 10 years old, and only a minor annoyance and Microsoft will soon stop supporting the version of windows on it. Hope you have no issues.

Cheers

Sorry to see that your laptop got the worse of it, Marky.

I have read where it is possible, but often the articles lack information, and being what the Net is there are conflicting reports.

From my gathering anything after Vista can present a range of possible problems, but not always. One can assume that refurbished (and sometime new variations) uses the same internal hardware, again not always and worse of all would be something like a chip (or video) disruptive upgrade or downgrade or similar. That said, all things being equal, the OS appears to be the biggest hurdle, especially if the Bios also plays a part. Not that those things can’t be overcome, but you don't want to add to the problem with incompatibility and possible corruption.

1) Backups on both hard drives is preferable - goes without saying. Recovery discs or other will be beneficial.

2) If possible, upgrade and/or check that drivers and programs are updated and similar on both machines before swapping. Support or lack of for upgrades as vinyl pointed out is very much a PITA.

3) Prepare to use either licences for a Windows as each laptop will likely be dedicated to it’s own computer and the hard drive will relate to the same (registry and such which may or may not become of concern). I believe that your needed Windows licence will be the one in use now for the Amazon computer. However, should that not be the case, you’ll need to call MS for authentication more likely than not in this circumstance. It is questionable if the Bios needs to be changed or updated, but some agree and others do not.

4) One alternative would be to do a clean install on the Amazon Hard drive or your swap providing you can transfer files, but you already know that.

5) At least with a clean drive you also have the cloning option which might be an easy solution to some of your transferring, which with some creativity can work both ways from and to both hard drives.

I’ll leave the hard drive cloning YouTube’s up to you to choose the best for your situation as they vary.

6) Maybe, online (the Cloud for example) can help you with some backup? Or your son’s computer? Or maybe you can’t because of the condition of your damaged laptop?

Looks like a challenge, but you might consider a tech in this case unless you’re ready and able to jump in without testing the waters. Been there done that building/upgrading PCs in the past, but the rules have changed, I’m old and memory has removed me from a lot of it. Maybe I can get a memory upgrade.
Good luck and I wish you the best for a successful mission, Marky. Let us know how you make out.

Me? Woke up to a good morning of future air flight and seat changes due to 737 Max disruptions. At least I get to fly the same day - so far. :?

Gosh, I miss the days when computers gave us the control and the hard copies.

Thanks vinyl. That sounds like Windows, alright. I ran into a problem last night. You know those little connectors on the motherboard that hold in ribbon cable? Well when I flipped two of them up, to release the cables, the little flippy things popped out. They aren't broken but they're so tiny I'm having a hard time popping them back in. I was getting tired so I thought I would let go until this morning. Please send some good electronic vibes that I don't break them.

Cheers

Thanks so much, FSB, for your research and forum link. My old lap top is completely dead. Upon opening it up, I found the DC jack and power button board are broken and there is a small crack in the motherboard. Max does good work, huh? LOL l have the HD swapped out but those two ribbon connectors are giving me fits. They're tiny. If I can't just pop them back in with a tweezer or something, I will call a tech. I'll let you know what happens. Send good vibes please.

Good morning, all!
