Good AM. A nice rainy Monday starting up here. The rest of the week is going to be about the same. Tiz that time of the year.

Good Morning, peoples of the Forums. Kinda dull outside. Yahoo! Rumour has it the first rain of the year will sprinkle later. I’ve heard these rumors before. The odds are about as good as a palm tree sprouting in my front yard.
But, ya never know. :P
Have a bodacious day y’all.

I heard the first lawn mower of the year outside my window and it wasn’t mine.
Tonight and tomorrow we finally get our much needed rain. Hoorah! :D

That alone makes it a great morning,

Have a good one gang.

Good morning, FSB and all Lizards.

FSB - do you have a riding mower or do you get some exercise and walk it? I remember going to my dad's house when he was very ill and cutting his grass for him. Two and a half acres of it and all he had was a 20-some inch walking mower. Man was I tired after doing that. And I was young then!

Good Mornin’. Much needed rain today. Time for the music room. :D No riding mower here. I get and prefer the exercise; but, recently I have complications that may slow that down. Too early to confirm though, so I’ll leave it at that. I got tired just reading about your grass cutting adventure, Marky. Last year the city stopped killing the weeds and, consequently, they now blow into our yards in abundance so (since they arrive from the top), there’s no easy solution. It’s a constant fight between using or not using chemicals, most of which are ineffective. Having lived in tourist areas, where chemicals were minimized, topsoil was screened, dandelions were cut, and selective gardening took place, I find simple municipal gardening lacking in some places. Winnipeg was one of the last cities in Canada to drop the malathion mass spraying of our properties for mosquitoes in prevention of West Nile and Encephalitus. Maybe, that’s because the farm community and a Monsanto building occupy the university just down the road. It’s even better now since thousands of released dragonflies, lady bugs, and concentrated spraying, and breeding manipulation in city limits have made a huge difference in the past couple of years. Less mosquitoes than ever - so far.

So, cutting grass is less of a problem than weeding. The low lying weeds are the problem because they can’t be cut. That is tiring, and unlike with grass cutting, less help is available, and repeated chemicals are expensive, and not the best in any case. I use concentrate and sprayers, but chemicals of any kind are questionable. We try to get the grass growing immediately after winter to limit the weeds, but that can be a challenge with weather patterns.

We’d like a new front yard, not cheap; but, neighbors have city boulevards that have constant weeds . . . so, out comes the 20 inch lawn mower for my exercise. I’ll soon have legs like the Rock’s biceps.

I don't do grass anymore. My house in Tucson had a lot of grass and a nice swimming pool. We moved up here about 15 years ago and haven't had grass or a pool since. Don't get me wrong. I love those things but can't maintain them anymore. You are fortunate to be able to cut your grass and I am happy for you.

My front and back yards are rock and desert plants. I have the whole place sprayed twice a year so we don't get any weeds. I'm not crazy about the chemicals but, if I don't do that, the weeds will take over. This seems to be a good year for scorpions and spiders. In the past two weeks, we had two scorpions in the house and a big wolf spider right outside our front door covered with all her babies.

You have to get those with one good wack or the babies run off in every direction. Those things creek me out more than anything.

My insect problem is ants.
I struggle to keep the red ants from ruining my lawn.
I kill one nest and two more spring up a week later.
It's an ongoing battle.
Wherever they nest the grass dies near the entrance.
I think they eat the roots near the entrance.
I can't think of why except maybe the roots are in their way.
When I mow I always have a bottle of killer clipped to the mower.
When I see a nest I park the mower close to the nest to shake the ground and when they come out they get sprayed.

I think I may start using cayenne in the future.
I've heard if you wash it into the soil the ants won't burrow and it doesn't hurt the grass.
I haven't researched that yet but I will soon.

We had an ant problem a couple of years ago. When we finally found the nest, up in a tree, our bug guy sprinkled these poison pellets around the tree. The ants think the pellets are food and bring them into the nest and kill the queen/s. No queen, no ants. That took care of them for good. I don't know if something like that would work on red ants though. Those are nasty little buggers. Good luck getting rid of them, Matt.

Thanks, Mark.
There's also a (much cheaper) home remedy that will kill the entire colony including the queen.
Useful for your situation when you're not sure where the nest is.
Equal parts of 20 Mule Team Borax and icing sugar well mixed and sifted together.
Place it where you see high ant traffic.
Use peanut butter to attract the ants by the smell.
When they discover the relatively odourless icing sugar they'll turn their attentions on that over the butter.
They take the borax back to the nest and give it to the queen.
Once ingested it takes up to a week to kill them.
It slowly but increasingly wreaks havoc with their digestion until they die.
I've heard cornmeal will do something similar but takes much longer.

Thanks for the tip, Matt. I copied it into a Word doc for future reference.

I know what those Wolf spiders are like, Marky. We had them on the coast. Whoa! They jump and run like a thoroughbred. They even try to scare you by rearing back on their hind legs like Trigger. I woke up one morning with one on the ceiling over my head in bed!! If it wasn’t bad enough that I had honest to goodness arachnophobia, his relative creeped into the side of our sofa. I hit that critter on the carpet with a magazine which did nothing, but I showed no mercy and dropped a rather large yellowpages phone book on him or her. Sayonara. :D After a few experiences with those creepy crawlies I actually got over my fear of spiders. Well, sort of.

As for your scorpions, I found this: https://responsiblepestcontrol.net/phoe ... ts-humans/
I only posted it as a verification
that pyrethin can work for scorpions (we fortunately have none of those). Read on for the alternative DIY.

A few years back I was going to hire an exterminator because wasps entered my family room through the walls/foundation, at the point where the house meets the foundation, where a nest was starting to be built. They gave me some tips and an inexpensive bottle of pyrethin powder (.2% pyrethin and 1% piperonyl butoxide) which I urgently sprayed into the entrance hole from the outside (don’t use around pets though), and then I sealed the entrance after I was convinced it was safe to do so. A big bill saved, a problem that could have wreaked havoc solved. I always have this powder available because it is common to exterminators for plenty of pests. You can get similar at most hardware stores and elsewhere.

My bottle looked like this and it may or may not be available in USA under this brand. If not there are others.

Matt. You beat me to the punch and that is good because I’m in agreement about the Borax. I’ve used it for years and have it standing by in the shed this very moment. I used to use cotton balls and honey with Borax, but your method surely works as well. Apparently, the ants digest it and they swell up and explode. Haha.
Try it, Marky. Like Matt said, it works! Unless your ants are connoisseurs.

Both products are effective and kind to the wallet.

Insect assassins unite! Hahaha!

Cheers!
