Arthl,

While I respect your opinion, I believe that influence has as much to do with change in mankind as does evolution. That can be proven by changing the baby's environment.

Take a box of crayons. They are different yet the same. They can each produce their own creation given the motivation by another. They can be part of a common theme. Melt them together and they become one in the same. They too have evolved somewhat, but not so much that they are so different. Break them, wear them out, lose or add them, separate them, name them, distribute them, talk about their history, discuss their failures and qualities, analyze how and why we have them, or do whatever comes to mind. In the end, they are still crayons.

YMMV

This is, I'm afraid, is still binary thinking.
Is a crayon stub still a crayon? How small does it have to wear down before it's no longer a crayon? Is a different brand of oil chalks a crayon? A crayon shaped piece of charcoal? A day-glo orange crayon that some people believe in, but which there is no hard evidence for? Crayon dust? When mixed with other dust?

What is a crayon (or a person) will vary depending on who you ask, and the circumstances. Attempts to pigeonhole will lead to disagreements, and conflicts when people feel strongly enough about it (like the pro-life debate).

I think we have to avoid these false dichotomies and learn to accept that there are grades, not absolutes. Think in degrees of peopleness and crayonness.

I believe you are a pernicious and purposeful Ignatius J. Reilly-type, criticizing everyone and everything in order to appear as superior and enlightened as only you believe you truly are...
