Fix It Again Tony.

Italian cars are crap. They just aren't reliable. They're fast and exciting and don't work half the time. I had and Alfa Romeo for three days once before I got a bit brutal with the gimp that sold it me. Never again.

Currently driving a Dodge Calibre that I adore. 50mpg regular driving. Comfy and smooth as can be on journeys. Clocked 138mph in it when I decided to see what it could do when I first got it.
The only problem is that you American people don't seem to like winding country lanes or steering round corners too much. I'm constantly going through wheel bearings and steering components.
German engine and gearbox, American chassis and bodywork, Italian rubber.
It's like a who's who of far right engineering. I keep expecting it to invade weaker cars parked near it.

The 60s and 70s were a heyday of Rod and Custom magazines. Kids everywhere drew concept vehicles on school books, walls, shirts. and most anywhere found suitable.

In one of those magazines, not heavily influenced by Motor City, on the last page of an issue there was a memo from the PR department to the Design department of one of the Big Three. Actually, it was a memo from the biggest of the three. This memo came to the magazine from an anonymous disgruntled employee who may or may not have had a connection with the magazine.

The memo was specific and it gave a directive as to what and when certain OEM parts should fail and/or be replaced over (if I remember correctly) a 10 year period (not unlike the warranty checklist).

For years I have searched for that mag, but, perhaps someone here has seen it? The memo didn't stop me from buying their cars because I assume(d) others carry on a similar practice in their own way.

At any rate, exploding bumper cylinders, burning magnesium motors and gas heaters, improperly placed fuel tanks, 2 fires in my brother's new dealer maintained Beemer, so many worksheets in the first 6 months for a host of problems from engine, to electrical, to a hot rear end failing to move my new 70s Charger, to any other car issue from any other manufacturer, and yes I have owned both Toyotas and Nissans as well as an early Honda (all new). I do agree, as pointed out, that there are good vehicle designs coming from Japan, but I seem to remember these guys getting a slap on the wrist for some tom foolery in their execution of the same.

I've owned or driven all of the big three and many foreign cars, including a '57 Rolls Silver Cloud, and various trucks. IMHO each have their merits but none are free from criticism. Allegiance to a brand can be for a variety of reasons. Only know that today's vehicles are more alike than different.

I believe a certain pickup has not had a long drawn out class action lawsuit about their vehicles rolling out of gear closed. This is reputed to be a threat to the very existence to the manufacturer's operation. Perhaps, this well known case has been resolved, I don't know. I do know that these type of cases are most often minimized because of the economic impact. Sad.
