I saw where I could put a custom American Vintage Telecaster together using an on-line procedure and then submit the custom outline to Fender ADE (American Design Experience) for assembly, and delivery. I laid out a very desirable, to me at least, guitar, and after going through the entire process, I find that they're not available for delivery to me up here in Canada, or anywhere outside the U.S. I contacted ADE and was told that there are no plans, at this time, to ship internationally. I was advised to make the purchase, have it shipped to a U.S. address, and then have it shipped to me in Canada. I don't have any family or fiends in the U.S., and so I suppose I'd have to make some kind of arrangement with a music store. It's just simply too much aggravation, so I think I'll just pass.
I was just wondering if anyone knows, or has an idea, why Fender would have this policy. It seems fairly simple to me. I order the guitar, and pay for everything. I get the guitar and Fender makes money. Isn't that what it's all about?

Any comments?.............................Dave

If I lived in Canada and truly wanted that guitar I'd damn well find a way to get it.

Get it?

For a second there, I though you were referring to a chord progression. :P Seriously though, that does suck. I wonder of it was easier with this sort of thing back in the day before you really even needed a passport to go to and from Canada?

I think they killed the ADE program and/or changed it recently to MOD shop...a really disappointing downgrade to what was available in the former ADE program as far as options are concerned.
I to had my eye on a tele design, from a week or so ago. It was one of those to hell with it I'm just gonna buy it, around the price of a CS teambuilt ... after looking around a lot for a tele model that fit what I wanted w/ no luck.

I know people in Canada that use a third party service for getting things shipped to them.

This site might be worth checking out:

100% on that! My last contact with ADE was on June 7th, and there was no mention of a program cancellation or modification, so who knows for sure?
The whole idea was kind of a custom shop "lite" approach for me. I found it very appealing, in that my finished design was essentially the same as a Merle Haggard signature Telecaster without the figured top. Mine had a simple 2 colour sunburst finish. All the other components, neck, fretboard, pickguard, hardware etc. could be made virtually identical and period correct, without the signature of course, for less than 1/3 the price. That would have allowed me to slip into that guitar world, and still have enough for groceries!

Thanks for the link Mike. I just saw it as I was posting this reply.
I looked at the examples of various shipping scenarios and seriously, based on the guitar's value, shipping weight, package dimension, taxes and duties, and the exchange rate on the dollar, I've decided to take up the baritone kazoo!!

Oh well, we'll see.........................Dave

I got an email notification the other day from Fender about the new MOD shop. If you are looking for vintage neck specs, that option is gone. That was the biggest take away imo. Good luck w/ your pursuit.

Thanks for that. I did go back to look at a couple of things that I'd included on my ADE design, and sure enough, it just took me directly to the new MOD shop format. They took away my neck, wtf? That was, like you say, the big one. They also deleted some other other crucial features that I was really looking forward too.
I can only come up with one word.........."boring!!!".... You'll have to excuse me, I have to go and play my Les Paul!!
