The courts eventually ruled it to be conscientious objection.

Conscientious objection or Draft Dodging, makes no difference....just semantics, when you are called by your country you go or you get the "F" out!

From what I know , Ali refused to go to Vietnam because in his words " I don't have anything against no Viet Cong because they never called me $@!&#% ! " Why should I be killing them for the white man ? " I served 20 years in the Navy and Vietnam was IMO, a huge mistake on our part. He was eventually classified as a conscientious objector due to his Muslim religion . I think if convicted, he would had served the 5 year prison sentence that was hanging over his head. He was outside of the ring, a man of peace who couldn't see killing innocent people and I had major respect for him because of that. He was a pacifist and I have been for the last several years myself.

I liked James Brown's funeral better.

It must be said that Mr. Ali and Howard Cosell were the best of frenimies. Without Ali I do not think Howard Cosell would have been as big as he was, and he got awfully big. Ali had a big mouth, but he sure could back it up. Never did anyone talk more trash or bring more bash! Cosell had a huge mouth too and it eventually was his undoing. Those were the days.

At the time Howard and Ali did their shtick, boxing was at a low level with talk of corruption and lack of interest. Those two renewed interest, and brought the sport to a new level of attention and I, along with my dad, am glad those two sparred in and out of the ring.
