As a kid who boxed for recreation, my heroes were Marciano for grit and Floyd Patterson for style. There were and are others, but one day a gem called Cassius Clay caught my attention. He had it all. He could "Float like a butter fly, sting like a bee. The hands can't hit what the eyes can't see", as the Louisville Lip put it. Cassius became Muhammad Ali and a contentious objector to the Vietnam war and an activist for many things including racial issues. Parkinson's disease infected him in 1984. Today he died of respiratory conflict. He was a man of many things. His books and videos are found amongst my collection of paraphenalia; but, since I don't have this recording I thought I'd share it with you.

"Don't count the days; make the days count." - Ali.

Muhammad Ali
January 17, 1942 - June 3 2016. Age 74

Thanks for the memories, Champ.
R.I.P.

And thus begins another carnival side show as relatives -- actual and alleged -- begin to jockey for their pecking-order position when the spoils are divvied up.

Actually, Arjay I think there will be less of an issue with Ali's estate. There is a pretty solid family, and a daughter who has a professional boxing history on her own. I would not be surprised to see his major interests already taken care of.

I do think there will be a long list of media, politicians, and special interest groups using Ali and his legacy for their gain, however. Airtime is already being divided amongst the pundits and celebrities. Some sincere, and some, sadly, for self promotion.

Wrong or right, considering world and domestic affairs, the Muslim connection is sure to erupt on all sides of the present political arena. IMHO.

One can only hope that fairness and sensibility comes to play. Yet, even here, the Greatest may still have a great influence for positive change.

Time will tell.

The young lad in Louisville who was drafted in lieu of Mr. Clay might beg to differ.

Up to that point I admired his amazing ability, potential.

In his defense it was a bad management decision. Had he the Colonel things, oh what am I saying, he was the greatest

Good call, Lightnin.

On a side note, it is said that Howard once stated that if he had a son who wanted to be a fighter, he would only allow Angelo Dundee to train him. That being said I'm sure Angelo will be waiting with Howard for his kid - Ali.

+1K....I don't care how good you are at something, draft dodging doesn't set well with me!

The courts eventually ruled it to be conscientious objection.

But I don't care how good you are at something, if you hit people in the face for money, it doesn't sell well with me.
IMO, boxing should go the same way as fox hunting and bullfighting, as a shameful relic of pandering to our baser instincts. Any "sport" where the point is inflicting pain and damage on others shows how short distance we humans have stepped from the tree we climbed down from. Fling poo if you have to; at least you'll do less damage.

Conscientious objection or Draft Dodging, makes no difference....just semantics, when you are called by your country you go or you get the "F" out!

Perhaps it was more an issue of economics.

It doesn't take a degree from Wharton to know that a million bucks a bout is better than $98.25 a week fighting for king and country.

As a goalie on Saturday who boxed on Friday, and got bored watching sticks fly and sweaters pulled so that sucker punches became the rule rather than the kind of hockey I once knew, I quit after inviting the goons to show up at ringside. I think you can guess how many roughnecks appeared. Zero. Why? Because there were rules and respect, no sweaters, as well as a Golden Glove coach from Montreal, and some pretty good boxers (I knew when to turn in my gloves when some mates of mine reached for a higher goal as age increased). Incidentally, this was not a club in a poor area of town. It was on a Naval base, so money goals were not necessarily the motivation. With my father busy, it kept me out of trouble rather than the other way around. I left with great life experiences, knowing how to control anger, and I learned appreciation for my adversaries. In my club, by law, we had to wear head gear until we were 16, and I would like to see that carried over to Pro Boxing. I personally enjoy Olympic boxing and I would like to see something in between. That won't happen and we know why.
I do agree that Pro Boxing has problems as mentioned; but, Ultimate Fighting (something out of my attention), Hockey, Baseball, and a slew of other sports fall into that bonehead fighting category . . . and don't tell me about contact excuses . . . I've worked in and out of a variety of professional sports locker rooms for a good deal of my life. I have a cousin who played for and won a National Puraltor Cup championship for hockey, and both teams in the final were the only ones with a no fighting policy! They frustrated and outplayed the other Provincial teams. Awesome hockey! For some reason uncontrolled fighting has been introduced or encouraged amongst sports that didn't have that reputation. Look at women's sports. The draw is impressive, the money is building, and with it so is the fighting. Women's hockey is only one example. It drives me and others crazy to see fighting in football. These morons in these basically non-fighting sports under original rules of the game should look to Hurling for toughness where no one is replaced and contact is an accepted rough play. They wouldn't last 10 minutes so says an Irish Canadian.
Whichever way you look at it, each athlete chooses their profession usually knowing the risks. Just know that fighting on the school ground had been replaced by guns and knives in the hall. Obviously, these delinquent kids (and adults) didn't have any release until the damage increased and the fuse was lit. Something changed. One school I went to included a boxing ring to settle problems or you could opt for what is now known as a child abuse strap!? Actually, the winner got the strap. It wasn't uncommon for old enemies to become new friends.

I believe that human nature has been misdirected to the point of frustration with dangerous repercussions. Unfortunately, kids are set at a disadvantage when put in situations, and many parents fear for their kids without preparing solutions. I too, however, would like to see a more Pacifist approach work . . . but, a closer look around shows us that the world is bigger than us, and no matter how we try, it's the world we live in IMHO. It is said that every man is the architect of his own fortune. As for Ali, I think this may apply and that is why I appreciate his accomplishments. YMMV.

With respect,
FSB

Having more than 7 years voluntary military experience as a paid killer, it doesn't make it any easier to swallow that the self serving and ill directed governments manage the fights either. Remember "A pen is mightier than the sword!"

Even with one's enemy, time and time again, there most often is a strange kinship and concern for the common man, and that is something to embrace. You'll find this in boxing too.

Peace
