Yeah. One of the best songs to cuddle up to your favourite squeeze. Thanks, Rollie.

Judging from the shaking about and running to the water my guess is that there are a lot of sand fleas on this beach.

Thank you FSB, that one soothed my surfer heart. These surfers are new to me but have been at it for a lifetime or so says their bio

Fu Manchu. Thanks for that, Rollie. I heard of that band some time ago but never took them up and, now that you’ve renewed my attention, I gotta say they’re great. I like ‘em. As I see it, it’s bands like this and variety that keeps Surf alive and lasting. I’m going to somewhat contradict myself though, by saying this isn’t always the case.

I guess it’s known that I’m not a big fan of Rap (which to me is not that far from free form beat poetry voiced in the Beatnik days which also could be good or bad - as with today’s Rap IMHO). The good - very good. The bad - speaks for itself. Spontaneous or scripted also tells a story. But, then again, the generation gap might have missed that and other poetic performances that were similarly motivated earlier on. Crossover was less or not a concern. Like the Beatnik and Hippie movement with their poetic art form, Rap is often far from it’s originality and amongst the emulated art I get it. It is what it is.

The problem I have with Rap is not that it is being sold out by grabbing other genres or that other genres are capitalizing on Rap (each to their own), but just as other genres would likely be looked at differently in the hood, for fear of losing or changing the soul of rap, so too, in my thinking, a danger of saturated rap incorporated with other music changes the game for both sides. It is one thing to share each other’s art, it is another thing to disrupt it without becoming a new sub-genre. In 2017 Rap, for the first time, surpassed Rock as the most popular genre (aside from album sales). The wedding I recently went to on the weekend had it’s share of good live Rap. The way things are going every gig will demand it unless it’s at a Seniors’ Home. I wouldn’t rule that out either.
That said, it’s not Rap per se that gets to me, it’s how it’s used. Rock and Roll, Country (including Country Rock), Latin, and so on appeals to me when it has the music that identifies it as coming from that genre. It doesn’t have to remain true to form, but it should have some corresponding identity so I can choose a playlist that has some coherency or blend.

I thought that I knew Rock (and Roll) which had evolved along the journey of R&B, Classics, Country, and Pop, and so on. I am aware of Rap falling into questionable history with some claiming thousands of village years from Africa, traditional songs from slaves in the fields, to DJ Kool Herc and the Bronx in the 70s. This was and is a very different evolution from Rock and Roll which has a lot of different parents each contributing to the genre. Other genres have adopted the homeless recently modern day formulated Rap/Hip Hop with a price tag attached. IMHO.

I thought Fu Manchu does have an attachment to Surf for example, if for no other reason, the spirit of it all. However, I’ve heard disconnected Rap Surf that makes me wonder how long it will be before a song that doesn’t relate to an original genre will take the awards for Country, Latino, Surf, or other (like Rap has with Rock and Roll). I dunno. I haven’t kept a close eye on it, so maybe this has already happened. It will as Rappers and others crossover with that goal. It’s just my 2 cents. Y¢MV. Better still, I wonder if Surf Rap will compete in Rap awards head to head. I think I’ll keep my money in my pocket.

Here’s an example that I believe does it right. A little reggae, a little hard edge, a little rap, and definitely a Surf vibe in the music (not to say that others don’t apply - but, Rap without Surf or other vibes shouldn’t move on to the next challenge in my books). 8)

Video format is odd. Wait for music.

Sorry for a long post . . . That’s a W(Rap). :P
- Cranky old Hodad.

You can't define surf music by how it is played. In Brazil, v.Spy v. Spy are referred to as an Aussie surf band, and the bassist from Violent Femmes, who is now living in Tasmania, has hooked up with the drummer and guitarist from Midnight Oil to play surf music.
