:? After awhile, they all start to sound much the same to me. Kinda like many of Fogerty's songs.

No argument there. Although, some here would say Surf music has it's differences (and this thread may prove that), and it evolved over time (even rap, most of which is not to my liking or up to par, has invaded the popularity of Surf). Surf music played a part in the development of effects and tone, sometimes including horns and keyboards, synths and whatnot, vocals, sound effects, as well as guitars and drums. It popularized some drum techniques, helped to sell guitars, spawned dance crazes, promoted the culture, became a car show favourite, accompanied the space race, and morphed into regional flavours. Much is, without question, the same and or similar. That's the beauty of it. Timeless.

Perhaps, this is why this music is well over half a century old, and Surf music is seemingly on it's way to making or at least nearing the 100 year mark with new recordings hitting the airwaves yearly. The best selling instrumental band in history is a Surf band (The Ventures), and they are still drawing large crowds. Many of the hit surfing tunes had million seller hits before today's large population downloads, and they are still selling. Not too shabby for a culture that is removed from the non coastal areas. Skateboarding and Snowboarding have embraced it. A lot of sub genres should be so lucky. IMHO. YMMV.

Besides, it's fun to play rockin' or chillin'.

Pre-modern surf, early 1800's, when men rode 50 ft. waves for a living arrrh

Knebworth, 1974. First Knebworth festival. Monster sound, couldn't fit it all in the shot, we were too close. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band was on second. Tim Buckley on the stage in this photo Image

The Show started promptly last night with the Revomatics (Wisconsin Surf Band) opening the show...

Image

They had a good sound and were tight despite the lead player using a very un-surf like 'Mustang'. They were thrilled to be opening for the Legend Dick Dale.

It seemed to take forever for the roadies to swap-out the Stage equipment. Dick had a vintage blond Showman and vintage Reverb unit he used.

Image

Dick started the set w/ a great rendition of "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" followed by "Shake n' Stomp", "Taco Wagon" and "The House of the Rising Sun"...

He played a 90-min set incl.: "Let's Go Trippin'", "Hey! Bo Diddley", "Fever", " Amazing Grace", "Rumble", "Ring of Fire", "I'm Coming Home", " Death of a Gremmie", with " Misirlou" ending the set.

He even did a stint on the drums, played a harp solo, and took over the Bass player's neck, fingering the chords while the Bass player did the picking...

At 79 years old, he really had the place rockin' and seems to have lost little, if anythi9ng from the shows I've seen him perform the past couple years.

Highly recommend seeing him if you're in or near where he'll be playing. Well worth the price of a ticket !!

Oh... almost forgot... after the show, Dick signed my poster of the event for me too... !! :)

cheers!

Thanks !!

Maybe the best part was when some female millennial shouted out loud during a lull " Hey, it's like the Black Eyed Peas !! "

Dale replied: " Sh*t Baby... I invented this stuff..."

And the crowd absolutely roared... !!

cheers!

Glad your evening was a lot of fun, Lightnin. Great followup and photos. I was interested in knowing if he still used his usual Showman amp to which he has claimed some credit, etc. Why change a good thing? Yet, we all know many do over the course of time. Having his signature is a bonus. Just curious to know if his son is on tour with him. Not sure if he's still around, or if he and Dale still get along considering a history of differences, etc.

FSB
I'll bet the Black Eyed Peas would be interested in hearing your story and Dale's response.

Actually, 'Jimmy' was not there on drums last night, though he was when I saw Dick in NOLA last year and back in 2014.

He and Dick do seem to have an on-again /off-again relationship, with Dick once stating in an interview that he only rarely sees his son, who occasionally plays drums at his concerts and further that: "...When he needs money he comes to me,"... "That's the only time I see him."

Of course, as we all know, ALL Families are dysfunctional to some degree, if you don't happen to believe so, you're just not looking hard enough... ;)

His current wife, Lana was there and is actually partially visible sitting in the white folding chair on the side of the stage (the Blond woman from behind).

Lana is an ex-Nurse who is now touring with Dick full-time because of his many health issues. It was very noticeable that this time, she was staying much closer to him and paying greater attention to him than I'd seen in the past.

So far as the Black eyed Peas and Fergie are concerned, I suspect some accommodation may have been reached between Dale and BEP for their sampling (some say rip-off) of phrases and riffs from Misirlou on their cut ‘Pump It' because Dick complimented their use of his stuff...
