You can't define surf music by how it is played. In Brazil, v.Spy v. Spy are referred to as an Aussie surf band, and the bassist from Violent Femmes, who is now living in Tasmania, has hooked up with the drummer and guitarist from Midnight Oil to play surf music.
You may be right, Argus. But, officially v. Spy v. Spy according to their website and elsewhere, are listed as a Ska/Pub band.

Rock, Alternative Rock, Progressive and Hard Rock, Post Punk, New Wave are genres most associated with the Oils. That includes a description from their promotional agency.

Obviously, they both may be identified by other genres elsewhere and other questionable bands may also find themselves in a Surf listing. I’ll pass on that for the moment.

While it is true that Midnight Oil had some success with surf music such as surf-instrumental “Wedding Cake Island”, and the fact that they have a following by the surf community that does not, questionably, make them primarily a Surf band per se. Wearing bathing suits and hanging around surfers certainly doesn’t. I don’t think all surfers listen to one kind of music either, although many do.

That would be like saying when I played the Kinks on the beach, or if I was do a Kanye rap, that would be Surf music. Ahh ... don’t think so. Perhaps. The Rolling Stones could play a version of Apache or an original surf song. Would that make the song a surf tune? Probably. Would it qualify them as a Surf Band? I don't think they’d like that. Would everything they do now be a Surf song. Nope!

Are there Surf bands and Surf music? Well, it appears there are.

Maybe, Violent Femmes will get to be accepted in that category; but, the bassist/songwriter you are talking of, Brian Ritchie, has said that the Femmes were, (and perhaps still are) a “repository for American roots music”. Hmmm?

Maybe, the Femmes will be a Surf Band or maybe a mash, punk, or rock and roll band that plays Surf music. I can’t say.

Sure surf music has evolved, but it’s more likely to include sub genres like Garage/Surf. There are so many variations added to genres these days that the answer to what is and isn’t is cloudy. Just because college kids like this or that music does that make it a college genre?

“Hey! Let’s get some mileage out of this genre.” “Sorry, dude you don’t fit.” “Fine, I’ll start my own thing, and add it to yours.””Great! Then I can do it too.” “WOW! That’s big dude. But, what about those other genres, bro’?” “Fuggedaboutit. It wasn’t working out, so to be different we showed up here.” Reminds me of 50s pop singers trying to break into Rock ‘n Roll. (That didn’t make them any less of a pop singer though).

Dick Dale is said to also have played protopunk - not to be confused with surf.

I’m not sure there is an expert. It’s what is accepted for marketing I suppose. If you like it, that’s what counts. I grew up on the Atlantic and Pacific and just because I wear a Hawaiian shirt it doesn’t make me a surfer (which I regret not having the opportunity to do as it became popular in my location later). I can and do play Surf music, and while I can’t define it completely, others may. But, I do know a following on the beach doesn’t make it so. And if that’s all it takes, you better make sure it’s not a lake and ‘Surf’s up!” YMMV.

Peace
FSB

Cool videos FSB. Fu Manchu are the new Dick Dale's lol. I do like the reggae/ska styles of surf music.

Glad you liked the vids, bros. Just trying to keep it real .

You’re right about Dick Dale, Rollie. I wish Nokie could chime in here too.

Ska music can be great, Rollie. Ironically, Ska and surf were not too far behind each other when they came to the front of the stage, and the association with reggae and New Orleans influencing Rock and Roll is well known.

Ska? Now there’s a genre that’s like a bag of marbles. Looking up the history shows that there are three questionable stages of Ska (late 50s early 60s, 70s, and 80s/90s) and oodles of spinoffs bringing us to today, and like marbles there are peewee versions, and Jumbo versions. Throw in a steelie version and you have a hard version. But is a steelie a marble? It is if you call it that. However, it may also be a bearing and not a marble. Add to the package (many colours just like Ska that has many interpretations from different countries or within a country).

Not to start any disagreement, but I did some research and, with exceptions, it seems that ska punk, ska surf, surf ska, ska reggae surf, surf reggae ska, and others like these are tossed about. Meanwhile, so too are surf punk and skate punk. But, generally accepted are ska/surf or ska, surf or similar. Also, because Ska is questionably sometimes thought to be a sub genre of Reggae, and Surf is a genre unto itself reggae/surf and reggae, surf are also used.

I don’t think it matters really; but, for newbies it might be good to point out that amongst the mix there is a mother genre and an example would be Ska Jazz being the baby and Jazz being the big mama.

There now are ya confoosed? Hahaha.

As for Surf there has also been a history of borrowing the ancient Middle Eastern vibe and today, in many circles, we are a long ways from that, but it’s always in reach.

This is what happens when you deviate from Dick Dale or The Ventures.

I’m digging this Kiwi (New Zealand) band, Marlin’s Dreaming. Their Jam room is reported to overlook a beach and they got together in a Surf shop. Here is their appropriate album Lizard Tears:

Thanks, Rollie for Surfer Girl. I love playing that on my Strat when I’m mellow.

I sometimes think the Beach Boys are misunderstood. For obvious reasons, and tragically from their timing, breakup, and overall troublesome past, a lot the of the talent was overlooked, especially far from the coastal beaches here and afar.

However, that’s part of the beauty of the Beach Boys. There’s a lot more than beach party and hot rod music in that lot and, thankfully, those discoveries are still talked of today. :D

I was just thinking (that doesn’t happen often). How cool would it have been to sit in on a session with those two?
