Thank you a thousand times over to the men and women on the board who have served in our U.S. Armed Forces. I hope you have wonderful and relaxing Memorial Day with your family and friends.

And three cheers for the unofficial start of summer! Some great weather here in Western New York this weekend. Hope everyone enjoys the holiday...

Memorial Day has nothing to do with veterans or active-duty troops.

It's a day set aside to commemorate those who have fallen in battle.

Most of the parades are rained out here in CT.

Indeed. Much world has Armistice Day / Remembrance Day / Poppy Day on 11/11 for honoring the fallen - not just their own soldiers, but allies and armed merchants. The US has Memorial Day for the fallen, and Veteran's Day on 11/11 for living veterans, but no day to honor fallen allies.

Still, I raise my glass to anyone, anywhere, anytime, who gave their life defending civilians.

+1K !!

I served, but deserve absolutely no recognition on this day!!

This day belongs to those who paid the ultimate price and such sacrifice should not be diluted by the inclusion of those others who merely served !!

It's things like these which show us what was lost when Civics Class gave way to Social Studies or Diversity Training.

I'm not slamming those subjects, except to say that they don't (IMHO) pre-empt a basic understanding of our History and how the Country works.

Even Clinton, in a National Address while in office, gave an Memorial Day speech which was directed solely at Veterans w/o so much as a reference to the Fallen. But, I guess the Fallen can't vote... such is Clinton...

FYI for those in the Dark, the day set aside to honor all veterans - Veterans Day, is November the 11th. The day was set to mark the end of WWI where the armistice began on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Cheers!

No offense intended sir. In my experience, people take today to remember those who have fallen and also give a thank you to those who are still here. But you are absolutely correct: Memorial Day is officially a holiday to honor and remember only those who died while serving in the armed forces.

No offense taken, I merely wanted to set the record straight. For those "who are still here" we have Armed Forces Day (which fell on the 21st of this month) for active duty personnel and Veteran's (nee "Armistice") Day on the 11th of November for those who served in the past.

I've had relatives that fought in WW1, WW2, and Vietnam. They all made it, but for certain, they knew a lot of those who did not. Here's to remembering those that didn't.
