The pickup routing on the body does look correct for a ST-57 model.

Note the "shoulder" in the control-cavity rout -- that's a hallmark for a '62 style body. It was added in order to accommodate one of the additional pickguard screws when the Strat transitioned from the single-ply 8-screw style to the 3-ply 11-screw type.

Likely this guitar is a partscaster.

This guitar may well have had Springy Sound where it currently sports a damaged Stratocaster decal.

Thanks brotherdave for your run down. I knew i would get some great information by posting here.

To reply to some of your statements...

The pencil marks on the neck, in one location it does look like it could be an S but on the other location it is clearly a 5. I have a MIJ Fender Squire from 1986 and the necks age wise and feel wise (not shape and I know they are two completely different necks) feel worlds apart. The neck on Greenie just feels OLD and worn.

The paint job is very well done. If it is a respray whoever did the work did it correctly and stripped the old paint to the wood because there are no visual signs of overlapping paint.

The wiring from what I have seen on pictures throughout the web of the early 80s MIJ strats, to include the 57 RI, are insulated with plastic/rubber and the wiring on mine is the cloth style wiring. Obviously this too could have been added at some point to keep the vintage feel but really it just adds to the mystery.

You are correct that there are no trem cover screw holes which I never even paid attention to. There doesn't seem to be any holes indicated under the paint that can be seen but that to could have been filled if it did indeed get repainted.

The Japan parts and or whole guitar are no surprise here in Hawaii. This island is prominently Asian influenced.

I am not planning my retirement on the value of this guitar, the mystery is a lot of fun for me. I enjoy learning more and more and it really does play great. I was initially asking if there was a way to send it to Fender for some hands on research just to know. I think what I have is something pretty special. I love the color too!

All the replies just add to the mystery of this guitar. For now it will hold a special place on my wall hanging over my 73 Bassman 50.

Isn't it great to belong to a Forum with such a knowledgable group?

Nice axe. The colour reminds me of my Dad's 1960 Plymouth Fury. Enjoy. :D

Sherwood Green was derived from a 1957 car color Ford offered on their Mercury (Sherwood Green) and Lincoln (Vermont Green) models. The Dupont Duco color code is 2526-H for both.

Plymouth had two neat greens in 1960. Chrome Green was the darker of the two and Spring Green which was a pastel green. Your dad's Fury was likely Chrome Green. That color was only used ONE year and never again!

If you're talking about the same guitar as page one, Sherwood Green it ain't - that is a lot darker green. I'd still vote for Sage Green or Ocean Turquoise.
But check & decide for yourself. This page has the most comprehensive color collection I know, and since they've gotten rid of annoying popups, I'll post a link: Fender Color Chat webatu

Arjay brought up an interesting angle on the shoulder & 62. I have in the back of my mind an image of long-long-ago seeing one of the very early MIJ Strats, with that shoulder but with an eight hole pickguard. Too long ago to be sure, but the story goes that the Japanese had a sixties Strat as a model for their first "reissues", so a distant possibility remains that same bodies exist on MIJ 57's and 62's.
And I tend to agree on the refinish option - and that the quality of the refin is pro level.

The Tokai connection mentioned is of course possible. I don't think Springy Sound but Goldstar Sound would be close.

The 5-57 or S-57 mark offers no help - it isn't a Tokai marking, but then again, a Fender actually (according to the main rule) should have "ST-57" and as a stamp, not written.

Anyway, IMHO you won't find the absolute sure identification - on the forum, whole internet or even via an inspection by an expert. Early MIJ's were inconstant on the markings, varied a lot (domestic/export etc.) and no records were kept or at least, are not available.

I'll still vote for a MIJ Fender of the early stages. But you can't cash that opinion, so just enjoy what you got for just three U.S.Grants, play on and play LOUD

Great call!
It does like like a 60s MOPAR colour.
My pop had a '64 Polara in a colour very close to that.

By the way, don't go thinking the nerdy humour in your handle has slipped past everyone's notice.
I get a lovely chuckle every time I look at the inherent irony in the word "sighlty" damaged.

+1

It does look like a solid instrument.

The mystery merely adds to the mystique.
